I was watching a History Channel show on cults the others day and one of the people commenting on the show mentioned that most cult leaders meet several (he said eight) of the criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorder. That got me to wondering whether Ellen White would meet any of the criteria. I took the following from a section of Wikipedia that was quoting the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders fourth edition (DSM-IV-TR). It defines Narcissistic Personality disorder as: A pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following: 1) Has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements) 2) Is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love 3) Believes that he or she is "special" and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions) 4) Requires excessive admiration 5) Has a sense of entitlement, i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations 6) Is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends 7) Lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others 8)Is often envious of others or believes others are envious of him or her 9)Shows arrogant, haughty behavior or attitudes. It is also a requirement of DSM-IV that a diagnosis of any specific personality disorder also satisfies a set of general personality disorder criteria. What do you guys think? | ||

Based on my training, I'd diagnose her with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. She meets all of the criteria... Something that is also common (which is not mentioned above) is they can display a sense of false humility (as a cover for their true self). | ||

IMO~ 'egw' meets the criteria for the 'disorder' that is described~ However, I will add one more~ 'egw' taught doctrines that came straight out of the, "domain of darkness"~NOT the~ "Kingdom of LIGHT!"~ ~mj~ | ||

Yes, for sure I think she exhibited these characteristics, but I also believe that she was sold out to satan, so she was also subject to the power and authority of the devil. I have also wondered if she was dissociative. I think she had a pretty abusive father, just judging from the way he didn't want to see her after she was hit in the face by the rock, seeing his pretty horrifying picture in the library at Andrews University...etc. Dissociative people can manifest the characteristics of many mental and personality disorders. Whatever the reality of her personality, she was used by evil. She was "owned" by evil and was satan's person. Harsh sounding...yes. I believe, though, that she made a deal with the devil. Colleen~ Yes, I agree. This is what I was trying to get across in my post #849. I, remember, the Scripture in Deuteronomy 18:20&22~ " But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. When a prophet speaketh in the name of the Lord, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken presumptuously: thou shall not be afraid of him." The adventists always try to get around this Scripture by saying that 'egw' did not claim to be a 'prophet'~ As far as I am concerned, they are only 'parsing' words! ~mj~ | ||

I think she was also Temporal Lobe Epilepsy. People with TLE can have Geschwind Syndrome, and it seems like EGW had it. From Wikipedia: Geschwind syndrome, also known as "Gastaut-Geschwind" is a characteristic personality syndrome consisting of symptoms such as circumstantiality, hypergraphia, altered sexuality (usually hyposexuality, meaning a decreased interest), and intensified mental life (deepened cognitive and emotionalresponses), hyper-religiosity and/or hyper-morality or moral ideas that is present in some epilepsy patients. This syndrome is particularly associated with temporal lobe epilepsy occurring in the left hemisphere of the brain | ||

Oh, some bad grammar there, Hypergraphia is when someone wants to write a lot. She had writings 17 times more than the Bible. The hyper morality is what drove a lot of her writings, giving so many restrictions on life. That is what has ruined the lives of millions of people. I do also think she was narcissistic too. Yet we also must remember the demonic nature of it all. Demons can make people do "wonderful things". Those miracles and superior knowledge of Ellen White came from the Devil. | ||

Yes, it's quite possible—perhaps probable—that EGW had brain damage. Nevertheless, the Adventist doctrines are not the product of a scrambled or unpredictable brain. They fit together seamlessly, and they all lead to the same place: another Jesus and Satan as the tragic hero, the scapegoat who is ultimately punished for the sins of the saved. After meeting both developmentally disabled and victims of traumatic brain injury who know and love and serve Jesus, temporal lobe epilepsy does not explain EGWs life and work. She made a deal with the devil, apparently. She conveyed deceptions that have become a major hide-in-plain-sight cult that deceives millions of people. EGW talked about her (spirit guide) accompaning angel that helped her with her writings. Those of you who do not know what a spirit guide is, it is a demonic angel. Somewhere I have read that she would conjure up her dead husband and talk to him. Of course all of this would be kept in secret by the church. | ||

At the risk of being repetitive, check out her "Early Writings" account of the Green Cord vision. (An angel gave her a green cord & told her to curl it up & keep it on her chest, then stretch it out whenever she wanted to talk to Jesus--very weird) It was a confirmation to me of the source of her info (...her angel "guide"...), when I found out what the color of the "chakra site" on a person's chest is.... | ||

Yes, the green cord vision is so weird, certainly sounds demonic. I was listening to a lady who had gotten into Reiki massage, and how it got very demonic...even though she wasn't inclined toward that kind of thing. She is now a Christian, but it's her story of that whole experience. She mentioned something about "chakras". I knew that each chakra also had it's own color. Sure enough, the chakra that is the chest area is green. Coincidence? I don't think so. I'm also curious about the book, "The Green Cord Dream", I think it is called, by Alex Bryan-the pastor at WWC. I would really like to read it, but I don't want to generate any income for anything related to Adventism. | ||

I bought an old copy of a children's book on "The Green Cord", written in the 80's, for research purposes (& for when I hear the words: "We never taught that!") It is creepy & dark. (Black line drawings, no color, drawing of a dark, steep, rickety staircase that her "angel" led her up to go visit "Jesus.") It boggles my mind that it was written, printed & sold to parents to read to their small children!!!!! Ellen was a child when she had this experience. We can't quit praying for the now grown children that had this book read to them...they'd be in their 30s. |
