My Methodist friend sent this to me privately, knowing that I've left sdaism & the sabbath; also that I am very favorable to real food. Would love to hear comments & reactions from others here. http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fgoo.gl%2FF6xI2&h=_AQGlg_5V&s=1 J9 |

The world needs a Sabbath? The world needs JESUS. Let's start end there*sigh* Having a sabbath does not curb materialism, business and workaholism. It only puts it on pause (or rechannels it) for 24 hours. |

I am seeing more & more emphasis on Sabbath, & the Law/10Cs out there among christians in general. As an sda my reaction would have been, finally the world is seeing the light that WE have & have had. WE were right all along. WE have the truth. God is working. Now I see it all diverts from Jesus Christ our Savior. |

What about combining food & faith?! As an sda we sure did a lot of that. . . now the world is going to do this in the name of mainstream christianity?! In the sda mindset it will be more confirmation for 'the truth', along with all who are going vegetarian/vegan to save the planet. (Message edited by 1john2v27nlt on March 12, 2013) |

I couldn't open the link, but from the discussion it sounds as if your Methodist friend is stressing works? If he/she thinks that the Sabbath was changed to Sunday, he/she is an Adventist-waiting-to-happen, because the day was NOT changed. (Oh, people sometimes try to keep Sunday, but they're ADDING an unnecessary work.) The day was fulfilled in Jesus. He is our Sabbath now. Yay! |

I'm sure my friend just thought I'd be interested in the content. She is a staunch Methodist & knows why I came out of sdaism. :-) I wonder why the link didn't work for you Asurprise. I just clicked on it & it worked for me. (Message edited by 1john2v27nlt on March 12, 2013) |

Oh, my goodness. I don't have the time right now to pursue this further (I'm buried in Proclamation), but I think this Fred Bahnson has Adventist roots. I went to school with a Greg Bahnson in Oregon, and Fred looks SO MUCH like him: build, coloring, features, etc. (I'm thinking Greg's son...?) It looks like his degrees are not from SDA schools, but still...and the way he talks about the "garden", and food, and the earth, and Sabbath...I know that's not unique to Adventism, but I'd bet he has SDA roots. What he is teaching is right out of the spiritual formation movement which is moving inexorably into the evangelical community...having already permeated the mainline churches. I predict we're going to hear more and more about the earth needing Sabbath (Note that Bahnson's slide during his talk said "The Earth Needs Sabbath", not "The Earth Needs A Sabbath"...) I think Adventists will be very surprised as the political-religious issues play out. Colleen |

here are 2 more links for those who haven't been able to watch it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Suna6LDOv_8&feature=youtu.be and http://www.tedxmanhattan.org/2013-talks J9---lots of other interesting talks about food on there too. I look forward to watching them all later. I don't know how my food convictions intersect with faith, at this point. I don't want to "act like an Adventist" when it comes to my new food choices... it's hard to navigate and not fall into the old patterns of turning up your nose at things that shouldn't be called food. (ha!) I am preferring to focus on relationships and building community around food. I'll just have to pray about the rest... |

Cloudwatcher~ Thanks for the links~ I took a look at both. I also did a search, because I was interested in whether this man is an adventsit; no luck~ The college, where he is faculty member, is ecumenical when it comes to choosing teachers. I probably shouldn't say this~but~ I think, after seeing his photo, he could use a good steak with a side of French-fried onion rings! ~mj~ |

The famous Urban Homesteaders from Pasadena share the same view but are not SDA. http://urbanhomestead.org/journal/2013/03/08/sabbath-time-out/ 1john2v27nlt you are right, another 'win' for the SDA. There are more flavors of the same deception. Even the keeping of the Sunday is another flavor. |

Why in the world would Adventists promote the idea that the world needs a sabbath? That's what they believe starts the Sunday laws! The world has gotten so bad that everyone says, Hey! We should be keeping the Sabbath! But they think it's Sunday, and that's when the Sabbath-keepers start getting persecuted. Not exactly the first thing I would be pushing as an Adventist. |

1John2, out where i live are ALOT of Hare Krishnas. The locals refer to them as The Kitchen Religion because they have Alot of picnics and socials and all their gatherings end in a big feast. Their meetings and feasts are always open to everyone. I know people who go to The SDA on Saturdays so they can getting a vegetarian feast after the service And The HI whenever they can For the vegetarian feast. Food definitely draws people to a particular religious organization. |

I like food, fellowship, & faith & I believe it is biblical. I just don't like the way I did it as an sda. Some have gone from reading food labels so as to not ingest unclean ingredients (lard in crackers) to now reading labels to avoid things like unreal foods & additives (msg, fructose, etc). Sharing a meal, sharing friendship, without the 'hooks' of trying to win someone to my belief system -- that motivation is what I'm wondering about. There is a phrase I've been pondering for decades, & it comes from egw, perhaps something that does have an element of truth in it. It is something to the effect that the world needs our acts of 'disinterested benevolence.' After considering that for awhile, I believe it means to do things with & for others without having an agenda; without an ulterior motive; without a vested interest (making an sda out of you). Yes we are to go and share the gospel. Yes we are to make disciples. But no one wants to be a 'project.' Food, friendship, fellowship, faith. . . . .no strings attached. . . . somehow. . . . |

Punababe808; do they serve more than yogurt and raisens? I read somewhere that that's what they serve! 1john2v27nlt; back when I was an SDA, I read can labels to make sure I wasn't eating any lard or anything "unclean." I felt guilty if I didn't - like I was being willingly ignorant if I didn't! The crazy thing is, by avoiding "unclean" meats, I was in effect saying that I (as a gentile) was unclean and seperated from God! I didn't know what Leviticus 20:24-26 said or tied in the fact that when Peter received his vision from God about the "unclean" meats in Acts 10, he found out that the gentiles had been cleansed! |

Food And religion are natural together. The first miracle of Jesus was at a wedding feast. Numerous of His miracles involve food And we weekly celebrate They Holy Meal. And, that's just with Christianity. Moslems have food restrictions And fasting during the daytine during Ramadan. Jews have food rules including no dairy or meat within so many hours Of eāch other. Many of The Eastern religions practice vegetarianism and exclude eggs. This is because of three belief on reincarnation. As to the Hare Krishna, I've been to Alot of their feasts And have never had yogurt or raisins. Usually it's super yummy Indian food or pizza. Since most The folks live communially And they grow their owner food on their ranches It history very high quality as FAR as nutrition goes And since they are vertical obsessive compulsive about cleanlunesd The food And cooking areas and utinsils area clean. For sure, religion and food fellowship area very bonded. |
