I keep an eye on my old "home" church, New Market SDA (Virginia) and found this gem in this week's bulletin: "Crisis Preparation: There is no question a crisis will come in our near future. Now is the time to prepare for it. Our Family Life department is offering a four part DVD series for parents: “Preparing for the Crisis.” The series is oriented toward parents with young children, but anyone is welcome. It offers many useful tips, so bring materials to take notes. The first presentation, Preparing our Hearts, will be today, at Sabbath School time in the Youth Sabbath School classroom at the end of the eastern corridor." I can only imagine what is contained in this DVD but I'd wager that it follows the "Preparation for the Final Crisis" book. As I get farther and farther out of Adventism, my heart aches less for the adults who do have the resources to find the Truth and aches more for the children who - like me - are born into this trap and have not developed the critical thinking skills necessary to know Truth from error. I'm going to order up a DVD set and see what's there. Stay tuned... |

I was recently invited to a "Shelf Reliance" party by an Adventist. It's for disaster preparedness. I wouldn't think anything of it had I been invited by a non-Adventist. Living in earthquake territory it is a good idea to be prepared, but you couldn't pay me to go to this end-of-time-persecution-preparedness party in disguise! They may not even have the persecution in mind, but I know it would come up and I couldn't stomach that since everyone there would be SDA. I should tell her that since I am the one who will allegedly be doing the chasing I really don't need the ER kit. OK, I'm not being very nice. It actually is quite sad... I will be interested to know about these DVD's. |

One other thing. When I was a youth mentor at our local SDA church I couldn't get the kids engaged when talking about Jesus or the Bible, but if persecution came up they got serious and would talk for long periods of time about how they think it would come about. They would discuss their family plans should they need to "flee", and would ask questions of each other about how they would survive. They would often go down the "path" of, "Didn't Ellen White say that____?" when discussing horrifying scenarios of the temptations to deny Jesus and the Sabbath. Since I started mentoring shortly after 9/11 there was plenty of opportunity to fear, and they were far more comfortable doing that than talking about Jesus. Freeatlast, as you think of these kids, please pray for the FAF Teen portion of the ministry. There is a way for these kids to know the truth about Adventism, if they are interested. |

Freeatlast, I totally understand your concern and look forward to hearing your DVD report. Free2dance, a "Shelf Reliance Party"?? Good grief...they truly have no working trust in God, do they? Of course, their whole scenario is upside down...(love your quip about not needing the kit...) but just think about it: where's the biblical model for storehousing supplies for a disaster? Think about it: God says to Elijah, "Take a satchel and fill it with bread and raisins and cheese; you're going to hide out at the Brook Cherith while Jezebel tries to have you killed. If you don't take food, there'll be nothing to eat...What??! You think I'm gonna have RAVENS bring you food? I help those who help themselves..." Sigh...I guess that wasn't very nice, either. God is completely faithful, though. Shelf Reliance just isn't part of God's instructions... Colleen |

F2D and Colleen, I cannot help but continually bring up the entire FAF enterprise in prayer (including those ministries that are ancillary to FAF like CFAR, LAM, etc), and will begin to pray specifically for the FAF teen/youth ministry. The more I consider how many children are deeply and permanently affected in toxic ways by their family's devotion to Adventism, the more indignant I become. For adults, it's "caveat emptor" (buyer beware) but the children trust their parents who hold so much power and influence over them, so they believe them. From a psychological perspective, fear can be a very effective short-term motivator, but it is essentially the cheapest option for people and organizations who simply have nothing else to offer as motivation for their followers. So this DVD series is produced by an SDA offshoot called "Restoration International". It consists of two SDA "doomsday prepper" self-sufficient families - the Waters and the Raynes - who moved to rural Montana (gee I wonder what prompted them to do that?!) and operate a traveling ministry and an online store disseminating all sorts of SDA-themed materials. And, lo and behold, there are children in their family pictures... Here is a link to the site: http://www.restoration-international.org/transaction_detail.php?id=404 The DVD set is $29 so it will be next payday before I can pull the trigger, but I'll give a report here after I've viewed the material |

Thank you, Free! I went to the website; there is a familiar "look" about them all; I've seen that "look" on the faces at Weimar, some i Loma Linda, and for sure on ultra-conservative EGW-loyal Adventists. There is something about the eyes... I noticed that the women garden and backpack in skirts, too. I absolutely believe (as I've previously said) that if one takes Adventism seriously, it leads one either into mental illness, or it spirals one out into agnosticism. Colleen |

OK, Free2dance...seriously, a "Shelf Reliance Party"? When I was in my 20's all I had to worry about were all vegetarian Tupperware parties (however I did know many SDAs who collected canned goods, dry beans, etc for the end times.) You are SO right, FAL! My heart aches for the children. When I find the youtube video that actually shows the brainwashing of SDA children, I'll post it. It gave me the creeps & needs to be posted again. |

Wow, Freeatlast! Thanks for sharing that. I went to the "About us" section and you have to have a password to see it. Hmmm...? I looked around the website and found a video for their "Family Campmeeting". I watched alllll (miserable) 7 minutes of it and it was so sad! The people are so...sad... The only person who said, "Jesus" and called him the Lord was a young girl being interviewed about her time there. I don't recall anything in the video about spending time in scripture or about Jesus Christ our Lord. At one point a man spent quite a bit of time talking about our will power and how we use that to connect to a living savior. But it was all about us, life changes, getting better... There was even a LONG quote from EGW about how when mankind is in heaven and recieves their crowns they will turn to their mothers and say that they are responsible for their salvation...what?!?!?! Sigh... Here is the link: http://www.restoration-international.org/article/59/upcoming-seminars/family-camps/family-camp-video |

Nowisee, I'm serious. I don't think the group who puts on the party is SDA, they are a part of a home party business, this is just their disaster preparedness party, which is fine. I have often wondered how to be prepared for an earthquake. lol, do you remember after 9/11 everyone was putting plastic on their windows and storing water? I stored water and decided months and months later to use it. It tasted like old plastic! It was horrible! I threw it out and realized then that I know nothing about preparing for disaster. So, there is a market for what they are doing. But in that context, I think we all know where it is going... |

OK, watch it yourselves: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbP4M2DAaCo The little boy, Ryan, said belief in Jesus was enough, but you can see how it was re-directed. Try not to get a case of sugar diabetes after listening to Miss Cindy ...(Sorry about that....) |

OK, free2dance, got it--but if there are adventists there, you know where it'll be going...it's the same idea as evangelistic use of vegetarianism, healthy eating, meatless Mondays, environmental concerns, going green, living in the wilderness & eating weeds, etc. Glad you're not going! |

Watching the video in post #1238. Wow. It's HORRIBLE. That little boy Ryan was so right. Way to destroy a child's simple faith. This is the perfect illustration why we shouldn't let our still-Adventist family bring our children to church with them. I don't have any opportunity to allow that, but if I did, I would remember this video. It would be so easy to think, oh, they're not going to teach the children anything wrong--children's classes are all about old testament stories like the flood and Daniel in the lion's den--but they're not! Letting your children go to an Adventist church is like leading them into their own lion's den--but in there the lions tear up the tender understanding your children have of Jesus and how He saves us completely when we believe and trust in Him. I don't think I'll even be able to finish this video, or the other one. |

Also, it's so typical of the Adventist emphasis on Heaven over Jesus. As a young Adventist I was so much more interested in fantasizing about what kind of house I would build in Heaven and the adventures I would go on rather than spending time with Jesus. Jesus was boring, and I didn't want to waste time worshiping Him all the time. What a change now. |

Katarain, I was the same way! It was all about Heaven. I remember my shock when soon after leaving Adventism I heard our pastor share this quote; "I would rather be in Hell with Jesus than in Heaven without Him." It was then that I remembered my fascination with Heaven as an Adventist and it was a wonderful thing to realize I could now agree with that quote! As an Adventist, there is no way I could have. |

Wow! I started watching the video in Nowisee's post #1238 also. Notice how the lady says that keeping God's commandments is necessary for salvation; then she turns around and says that we're not saved by keeping the commandments, that they're a result of Jesus' grace. No wonder I was confused as an Adventist! Since none of the cults have the Holy Spirit because they aren't saved, they can never get it. So in order to "look" like Christians, they have to add a few rules. The fact is, a person is saved by believing in Jesus just as Acts 16:31 says. They are sealed by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13-14), Who Himself does the work in us. Ephesians 2:10 says that "we are His [God's] workmanship" and that our salvation is "not our own doing" and "not a result of works" - Ephesians 2:8-9. [I put this last part down in case there are any Adventists lurking.] |

Yes. We were told that we wouldn't get the Holy Spirit until the latter rain. |

Yes, Katarain, I know I certainly was! You know, I think that "latter rain" idea has been so misused even outside of Adventism. IMO, the misuse of that text by influential people will likely have a role in the apostasy of the church. "Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the REBELLION comes first..." 2 Thessalonians 2:3a (nothing there about a revival) "While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape." 1 Thessalonians 5:3 "Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons," 1 Timothy 4:1 We have to be so careful because as Adventists we too were taught that there would be an amazing latter rain of the Holy Spirit. A lot of Adventists (and former Adventists who are not studying with solid pastors) are being swept up into this uniting of all churches under the misguided idea that there is a latter rain occurring now that is unifying all peoples and that if you aren't healing people or seeing miracles than you are missing it and you are not in the right church. I couldn't give a solid study on what the latter rain is, but my understanding of it now is that the Holy Spirit was given to the church at Pentecost and that He will be given to the Jews during the persecution. I don't read anywhere that the people of God will get an "extra dose" of Spirit and miracles just before Christs returns. Correct me if I'm wrong. Like I said, I haven't done a major study on the latter rain, but I do know that what I thought about it before isn't what I see in scripture now. |

Nowisee, I just watched a part of your link on Utube and the little boy Ryan .. Couldn't watch the whole thing .... The subtle lies and distortion in teaching children was unsettling ... What struck me was the little guy Ryan saying, "I think anyone who believes in Jesus will be in heaven". ... The very next words are ..... Would you like to ADD to that ... and then comes an EGW understanding .... Whoever lives up to the light they are given ... And then the adult in the room directs the, to the 10 commandments .... Jesus plus ... The formula for salvation in Adventism .... But in the video the adult then negates the works idea - though they just led the discussion to a works understanding ... You know you have and love Jesus if you keep His commandments ... Mind games .... Brain type of washing that puts two opposites together and counts it as true .... Thanks Nowisee ... I knew and have met and spoken personally with the adult in this video .... She gave a series of talks at a church I pastored in .... I remember her wanting to mentor me in some way ... And my senior paster wanted that too ... Thankfully, I was not sucked into it all .... |

JRT~ I was not going to watch the videos posted by 'Nowisee', but I gave in this morning ! It is disturbing, to say the least~ However, not surprising~ Adventists completely miss the Biblical understanding of the JESUS 'commandments'~(as I did at one time)~ I wonder how many of the children, interviewed by "Miss Cindy" are actually being educated in an adventist school? if they are~ believe me, "indoctrination" is a much better descriptive~ I,too, recognize "Miss Cindy"! ~mj~ |

As an active member of the American Red Cross i would like to recommend all SDA 's as well as all others not rely on Ellen White for disaster preparedness but rather on common sense. Go to the Red Cross website and learn about how to prepare for a troublesome time. |
