Nowisee, The article on spiritual abuse brought tears to my eyes as well. I've shed quite a few tears lately regarding this issue. I never knew how truly abused I was in the SDA system until I walked away... Adventism took everything from me - my joy, my hopes & dreams, my spiritual gifts, my Jesus, EVERYTHING - and replaced it with fear, anxiety, dread, resentment, and lonliness. I became an empty shell, smiling on the outside and dead on the inside. It was unbearable and I praise God everyday that He knew when enough was enough, intervened and led me out of the darkness into His glorious and saving light! I'll admit, however, that the emotional process of walking through the grief and loss of the consequences of being brainwashed and controlled by lies has been really, really hard. Part of the struggle for me is that most Christians don't identify Adventism as the cult that it is and, therefore, don't know to reach out to those of us that need a lot of extra support. It's not their fault, but I sometimes feel alone amongst even my real Christian friends because they cannot connect with the anquish I feel. I know over time I will heal and I trust that God is big enough to do this for me. I believe that coming out of Adventism is more difficult and confusing than all of the other cults. You end up feeling insane because of all the double-talk and the insistence that SDA doctrine is biblical. Unlike other cults, Adventism has masterfully used Scripture to "prove" everything, so it's profoundly difficult to see the error when you're entrenched in it. | ||

Lyrical~ I identify with what you are saying~ Even though I left the adventist denomination 17 years ago, I have yet to find the real understanding and support from the "Christian" friends I have made. They do the best they can, but they, for the most part do not have the desire to really read and try to understand the damage of the the doctrines of adventism~ Maybe this is a good thing? that they do not fill their minds with heretical teachings and get them mixed up with the TRUTH of the Scripture! As for the Pastors of "Christian" churches, I do think it would be helpful if they educated themselves regarding adventism~ ~sigh~ In closing, for many years I have thought that adventism produces a "sort-of" Schizophrenia in those who are indoctrinated with it~ and when you leave the cocoon of adventism you have to process out of this mental quagmire~ Thank GOD in Heaven, HE brings us out of this 'pit'~ But HE does not leave us alone~ HE is our 'Rock' in all the storms~ I trust only in HIM~! ~mj~ | ||

Lyrical~ One more thing~! adventism is a "cult"~!! not just a church you have decided to leave and join another church~! By it's very definition~"cult"~ a person or thing in which one gives devotion or homage. In adventism, we were first and foremost giving our devotion to 'egw' instead of JESUS~ Even if we thought we weren't~ your mind is so indoctrinated~ I think mormonism ranks right up there with adventism~ remember they have a prophet also, Joseph Smith! "Adventism took everything from me - my joy, my hopes & dreams, my spiritual gifts, my Jesus, EVERYTHING" ***************************** Yes, Lyrical, all that plus also took my connections to other people, ie non-sdas; it's divisive, limiting, & isolating. I was angry & depressed & these are many of the reasons. But I thought I had to 'suffer' because after all my Savior suffered, left heaven, will be limited in a human body forever - so what was I whining about? Look forward to heaven; this earth is not our home; we'll have tribulation here; OK Now I realize it was abusive & cultic. And my never-been friends do not 'get it', although they love me. Praising God for all He has done! J9 | ||

Merry Christmas, Everyone! I just want to encourage you all to read the lastest issue of "Proclamation!" Magazine. As a non-SDA who lives with SDA family, there is SO much not only in this issue but in the past issues that I think apply to many Christians regardless of their affiliation with SDA. I always find encouragement along with great wisdom and perspective. Good job, Colleen! Keep these issues coming! | ||

I had a friend who mentioned that in her bible study group the sda is christian and their leader gently corrected her because he did a deep study into sda and bluntly told everyone in the group that it is cultic and explained why. My heart just sang when she told me. And yes I agree the non-sda pastors just do not get it. They see JW's, Mormons and catholics as cultic but not sda because sda have done a wonderful job of pulling the wool over their eyes and when I try to point it out they just do not want to believe it or have a hard time processing it. MJ, A face2face chat would be spectacular! Perhaps someday... Actually being able to identify very early on that Adventism is a cult has been instrumental in helping me understand the craziness and emotional turmoil I lived for so many years. It is most definitely NOT just another religion! J9, Yes, the effects of isolation from other Christians is profound, isn't it? I never realized how cut-off I was until I left. There was always an underlying "us/them" feeling that kept me from truly engaging with non-SDAs. I was never really a whole person. | ||

I always go to the letters to the editor first..yes I'm guilty. The most interesting one to me was the one titled 'I've had enough.' The persons letter was a sore reminder that even though you may have studied in a school of divinity...there is a real pull toward Adventism via sabbath worship. It is real and it is deadly. We need to be reminded of this every once in a while. Once a person begins to dabble into sabbath worship, I don't care if that person is evangelical or what..then you are subject to be pulled into Adventism or a cult like it. One begins to feel that he is contributing to his/her own salvation. After once becoming convinced of sabbath worship, then he/she is on the fast road to oblivion in a cult church. River | ||

River~ You are not the only "guilty one", as far as the 'Letters to the Editor' are concerned! I go there first, too! sigh ! ellen g. white sure did a number on the psyche of the people with the 'sabbath' demand, that she got from Joseph Bates~ I agree, this teaching, is the "One" that puts people on the, "fast road to oblivion in a cult church." ~mj~ |
