I remember being an SDA kid sitting in church on Saturday s and hearing about how important the SDA hospitals are And how important it is that we serve Him as health care professionals especially in The missions and SDA medical facilities. I used to wonder, and still do wonder why those professions are so much more respected and encouraged than say fire fighters, military, FBI, police, emt 's, etcetera, and others who work hard protecting The public. I'm a cirtified first responder with Red Cross And an on standby to be deployed ed back east because of Sandy. Made me wonder why and how they chose hospitals over say owning an amballance company. Etcetera. |

Just my thoughts~ The medical profession can work on sabbath to heal the sick and not be considered "breaking the sabbath"~ many times these individuals will not take "pay" for their work on the "7TH" day, or if paid, give it to the hospital or church~ I am not suggesting that all will do this; however, people that I knew when I was an sda would not keep the money they earned on the sabbath~ So it follows that the rest of the careers you listed above are not usual choices, because of the "not working" on the sabbath commandment~ and in the adventist mind do not carry as much prestige within their "group"~ Also, "egw" put such an emphasis on the "medical" profession, as being the "right arm of the message." Medical people could carry the sda message to places where ordinary people could not in the world, establishing missions, clinics, hospitals, churches and schools. The above are just a few ideas that might answer your question. ~mj~ (Message edited by mjcmcook on November 06, 2012) |

According to EGW, the health message was the right arm of the gospel. She felt that it was the best way to get other people sucked into Adventism. |

It seems like a big, giant contradiction to support medical work but not professions such as the military. I met many SDAs who were vehemently against joining the military because of the "working on the Sabbath" issue but were just fine with MDs, nurses, etc. providing healthcare on Saturday. One can also think of it historically: EMTs weren't around in the U.S. until around the 1970s, well after the establishment of the SDA church. Here's another one: who brings in more tithe into a church, a doctor or an EMT? (I know in the U.S. EMTs get paid next to nothing.) That sounds kind of evil and I wonder if anyone actually thinks about it? I agree with what everyone else has said: the emphasis seems to be on being in the best position to spread "the health message." I remember that in events that our church held the "health message" was often the foot in the door to people's minds, then they'd start bringing up the Sabbath and all that. |

"e. g. white" stated clearly that the, Medical Missionary work, was the "right arm of the message", which included the "health message"~ Testimonies volume 6 page 288~ also, this can be found in, Ellen G. White Releases, volume 5 page 134. Needless to say, these are only two excerpts from her writings dealing with her belief in this work, since there are countless others. ~mj~ |

I agree with Mj that Adventists can work on Sabbath if they're doing medical stuff, but the other stuff is frowned on. (Also job fields that require people to use guns, such as police, are frowned on.) Back when I was an Adventist, a co-worker asked me about something she'd heard on an Adventist TV program - perhaps 3-ABN. She was wondering if Adventists didn't eat cheese since they were talking about using a cheese substitute. I downplayed it, probably saying that yes, Adventits ate cheese but that it was more healthy not to, etc.... I was probably thinking something like: yikes! Why did they put THAT on TV? They should get people into the Adventist church FIRST, and then they can tell them that Ellen White says not to eat cheese, milk and sugar together, cinnimon and other spices, tea, coffee, meat, etc. because they bring out the animal passions, etc. |

The "health message" is all about proselytizing. It's absolutely "spiritual" to an Adventist, even thought they deny that fact and say it's all about "health". Nevertheless, they feel guilty before God if they don't observe whatever the latest "fad" is in the SDA health message, and today the most current push is veganism. They feel guilty about compromising their own health by eating meat and dairy, and they do fear such indulgence will affect their spiritual perceptions. Not to mention...they live in continual low-grade fear that they will develop a chronic disease like cancer or heart disease, and they themselves will be guilty before God for their own disease if they ate meat. I knew an Adventist woman years ago who died at the age of 35 from breast cancer. She was mostly vegetarian, but she occasionally imbibed in chicken. She was deluged with guilt over that chicken, wondering if it had precipitated her cancer. Sigh. And, just like all their other whitewashed claims, their health message isn't what accounts for their longer life. It's their lack of smoking and (excessive) drinking. It's not just SDAs who have this advantage; Mormons have it as well, and so do other people who eat healthfully and don't smoke/drink. But the "health message" IS the right arm of their gospel. When you don't have an immaterial spirit but are entirely physical, you've got nothing except your own body. No wonder they obsess about diet! Colleen |

It just seems so loony to me that they claim to have the last day health message and are only focused on their own Jed medical facilities and so on. There is so much more to promoting healthy living than avoiding pork, meat, alcohol and caffeine and not smoking. Several years ago attended the entire six weeks of health meetings at the local SDA church. It turned into a commercial for their vege products .never once did The teacher discuss exercise, avoiding getting skin cancer, environmental health issues such as hepatitis, ecoli, salmanilla, and so on. Emergency responders are as necessary on the Sabbath as are doctors and nurses. |

Punababe808~ I agree that medical personnel are essential every day of the week! in and out of the hospital setting~ Also, the sda "health message" is missing so many necessary components~ to create a balanced life style. IMO~ adventism is just "upside down and backwards"~! ~mj~ (Message edited by mjcmcook on November 07, 2012) |

When your sing an hymn in church and you sing the words like The composer wrote them and not how the SDA church has changed them |
