The Clear Word says that it cuts into a man's soul and spirit as well as into his bones and marrow. It just ignores the dividing part. Probably what most SDAs do. | ||

Oh, you know...to an Adventist, "soul" and "spirit" are more or less metaphorical terms. Man, they say, IS a living soul, and spirit is the breath he breathes. Everything is spiritualized and metaphorical. The more literally we take the Bible, the more sense it makes... Colleen | ||

That chapter talks about how our rest is in Jesus, not in a certain day. As an Adventist, I had always thought the verse was affirming the power of God's word, and it was affirming Saturday as the day of rest. | ||

...and "spirit" in this passage re-interpreted "breath" by Adventists comes from the Greek word "pneuma" which the Adventists are so fond of saying means "air" and they use examples such as pneumonia and pneumatic. Yet, the passage here clearly indicates that spirit is NOT breath! Even the Adventists admit (because Ellen White says so) that the Holy Spirit is God - not "the Holy Breath," though they still say pneuna IS breath! In Acts 5:4 Peter is asking Ananias how he could have lied to the Holy Spirit (which is pneuma in the Greek). They can't have it both ways. Either Ananias lied to the Holy Breath as Adventists should be saying if they want to be true to their beliefs or they'll need to give up the notion that man doesn't have a spirit! (In the interlinear Greek-English New Testament I have, the Greek is even spelled the same way. My computer won't let me copy and paste the Greek characters, so I'll spell the sounds of the Greek letters out in English - Pi Nu Epsilon Upsilon Mu Alpha which is Pneuma.) | ||

I hope I'm not derailing this thread. What Colleen said reminded me of the Adventist doctrine that when the Bible says "spirit," it means air or breath. Anyway I cannot resist just one more.... In John 4:24 Jesus is telling the Samaritan woman, "God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” Adventists, if they want to be true to their doctrine would re-interpret that: "God is air/breath, and those who worship Him must worship in air/breath and truth." | ||

One can only hope that Adventists gain some common sense when reading their worn to the nub bibles before they come to a Formaldehyde and stainless steel rest stop, but many won't. Its easier to convince a concrete block that its high grade hardwood than it is to convince an Adventist that this makes no sense at all. River | ||

Yes, we must keep praying. You're right, River, people do not change easily. It takes direct intervention by the Holy Spirit for a person to consider that everything he has believed to define reality is false. It's completely disorienting, and it's a miracle when anyone comes to the truth and "sees". Colleen |
