My wife and I have satellite tv, yet we mostly end up watching net flix. We do watch some of the church channels and I had the tv set on a church channel I had been watching during the week. I was getting ready to switch they system to a british tv series that we had been watching and this preacher was on the tv. He made this statement. "Jesus became the works of the devil." My mouth dropped open as these words hit my ears..BANG! I thought, "Oh Lord, did he just say that?" It just makes you wonder at such a misunderstanding of scripture. The Bible tells us in Timothy II 2:15 Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. Timothy II 2:16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. That there was surely profane babbling if I ever heard profane babbling with no understanding of our Lord Jesus life, death and resurrection whatsoever. River |

I wonder if this preacher said this in relationship to 2 Cor. 5:21: "For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." |

Yes, Nowhitehats, I wondered that too...but the wording was truly unfortunate. We really have to be careful how we "explain" Scripture. I sympathize with your horror, River. Colleen |

Yes Nowhite, that was the theme. He said more about it, I only mentioned the worst of the statements. He was definitely veering from any solid Christian theology with the idea that Christ became sin. I never condemn a preacher for an honest misstatement, they are made all the time and Gods ministers are not perfect by a long shot. When the entirety of the message being brought fourth indicates that there was ever sin in Christ at any time, well..thats just flat wrong and it resulted in a horribly disfigured theology that makes me literally cringe. I'm sitting there desperately trying to change the channel and I'm so upset that I can't hit the right button. I think I might have broke a tooth I bit down so hard. River |

River, what is your take on the aforementioned 2 Cor 5:21 and also Pet. 2:24: "He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree." It seems to me there is a distinction to be made: In Jesus Christ there never was, isn't, and never will be any sin. At the same time, He embodied sin on the Cross so that God could condemn sin in the flesh. I'm not sure what this pastor meant in particular, but it hits the ear wrong. Did he explain himself? On the other hand, IIRC Catholics in Luther's time bristled at the idea that God would impute sin to the sinless Christ on the Cross. |

My take on it is exactly as it reads. The truth is, there is an awful lot of bad teachers out there sending the wrong message and we need to be able to discern when the wrong message is being taught or preached. On the one hand we don't need to get up and run out screaming every time we hear something we don't agree with, but on the other hand we do need to know when to get up and get out. River |
