How do Adventist keep the Sabbath? Or, what is proper Sabbath observance according to the SDA fundamental beliefs? I have never observed uniformity in Sabbath observance and if it is a matter of conscience why is there so much emphasis on keeping it? I was asked if I still believe that keeping the Sabbath is required for salvation. I responded with 'no' and we got into the question above. Just wondering. |

Adventists believe they HAVE to keep the Sabbath. You're right, there isn't uniformity in "keeping" it. Some go out to eat on Sabbath if they're traveling. Some would rather go hungry. It all depends on how conservative or liberal that the Adventist in question is, I guess. Most agree that "unnecessary" work should never be done on Sabbath, but that too, varies. For my family, Mother made all the main stuff for Sabbath dinner on Friday then heated it on Sabbath. We could go for a long strenuous hike on Sabbath, but not swim in a mountain stream. I imagine the rules are that way in any of the cults though.... If someone isn't too strict with their behavior, then they feel they're pretty good and ready for heaven; when in reality all their best works are filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6). |
