We are going to spend some time dissecting 1 John 1:5 - 2:2. These particular verses have been misused and misinterpreted. They are wrought with triggering words that can send our former Adventist emotions off the charts. Therefore, lets take our time and dig deep.
quote:5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. 2 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. ESV
Questions 1.)What other places in the Bible refer to "God is light"? (See if you can find that phrase in the other writings of John; Gospel of John, 1 John, 2 John, 3 John, Revelation). What does that phrase mean? 2.) What is the darkness John is referring to here? Where in the Bible does it talk about walking in darkness? What do we know about this phrase from scripture "walking in darkness"? 3.) What does it mean to walk in the light? Where else in the Bible does it talk about walking in the light? 4.) How do we deceive ourselves? When is the "truth not in us" according to this passage? 5.) Try to summarize verses 5-8 into one sentence. *** Again, remember to pray before studying - asking the Holy Spirit to reveal truth to you. And secondly, a reminder, do not look into any commentaries, books, sermons, etc. Just use your cross-references, or a Strong's Concordance, or use Bible Gateway on the internet, or other software that allows you to search the Bible. Feel free to use the Greek for the words in this passage. |

1.Psalm 89:15: "Blessed are the people who know the festal shout, who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face," Is. 2:5: O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord." Jn. 8-12: Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Jn. 12:35: "So Jesus said to them, 'The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. Also John 1:1-14. "God is Light" is too big for me to explain, but it does suggest that nothing hidden or deceptive can remain concealed in His presence. His presence exposes all "hidden agendas". He reveals reality. He is Life...John 1 says in Jesus was life, and that life was the light of men. 2. Walking in light means believing in Jesus and being born again. Then it means being willing to know what is real and true. It means exposing myself to God's word and submitting my mind and my rationale to His word and to His Spirit in order to know what is true. It means being willing to submit my brokenness to Him and to allow Him to heal my memories and my heart as well as my head and my theology. It means believing in the Lord Jesus and receiving the atonement His blood paid for my incurable condition of "sinful". Is. 9:2 and Matthew 4:16 both say "the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light." Matthew says for those dwelling in the region of death, a light has dawned. "Darkness" is death, especially spiritual death, in Scripture. Jesus is Light, and Light brings us to life, revealing what is real and true. 3. Walking in the light means walking in the truth of Jesus and receiving spiritual life. John 1 discusses this miracle. 4. We deceive ourselves when when we say we have no sin, and when we say we have no sin, the truth is not in us. 5. We have fellowship with God and each other if we walk in His light because His blood cleanses us from all sin, [even the sins we still commit in our flesh]; if, however, we claim to walk in the light but remain spiritually dead, we are lying, and we also lie if we claim we have no sins of the flesh when we're walking in the light. (There! It's one long compound-complex sentence!) Colleen |

Questions 1.) It seems to me that light can be replaced with righteous or righteousness God is righteous Rev. 22:5 And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light,(righteousness) and they will reign forever and ever. John 12:46 I have come into the world as light,(righteousness) so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. 2.) Darkness is not having Christ’s righteousness. John 8:12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Walking in darkness is walking without Christ’s righteousness covering us. 3.) Walking in the light is accepting Christ’s free gift of salvation. Isaiah 2:5 O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord. 4.) We deceive ourselves when we say we believe in Christ and continue to believe we have to do works to make ourselves safe to save. Christ(truth)is not in us if we do not accept His free gift of salvation. 5.) Christ is our righteousness, and takes away our sin so we can have fellowship with Him and other believers. |
