I've been hearing alot on this topic lately. I've been receiving materials in the mail from various SDA sources. What I gathering from all of this that the SDA church is at odds with it, with the possibility of a split over the whole issue. What are your ideas? Even though I am no longer SDA I am interested in the news of the church and what is going. Before I put my 2cents into this discussion, I would love hear your different ideas. I do know that some denominations do allow women ministers, like the Episcopal church. But if my memory serves me, I remember somewhere that Ellen White had her pastoral credentials. So if she can be in the ministerial role why not let other women do it as well. | ||

Hi Alison1, I don't know if you are familiar with Spectrum magazine, but on their site, they have several blogs about women's ordination. Their site is spectrummagazine.org/blog/. Seems that many of the NAD divisions want to ordain women, but the rest of the world church is more conservative. Interesting conversation on many SDA topics there. | ||

I noticed the nearest regular SDA church in Shelton, WA has a female senior pastor. Apparently this isn't a big deal around here. It also has an elementry school and claims well over two hundred members. Not bad for a Washington State county that is mostly full of trees and not much else that could be called 'civilization'. From what I remember, people used EGW quotes to both support and to oppose it. That's not confusing at all. :P What do I think about women's ordination in general? I just think it's another tool that Satan uses to divide Christians. I don't see the problem with it and feel that the scriptures that people often use to support their opposition are used in a proof-texting way, much how SDAs use scripture, overlooking the many aspects of context. I also feel that the issue is used more broadly to suppress women in the church, because it seems that many churches that advocate a "no woman preachers" viewpoint seem to give the impression of inferiority of women in general. | ||

Adventism has, for some time, allowed women to be senior pastors of local churches while disallowing the fourth and highest level of ordination for them. Southeastern California Conference began, some years ago, to issue the same ordination to both male and female pastors...but their bold individualism has not been adopted nor approved at large. It's ironic that its an issue in an organization that bases its biblical hermeneutic on a female prophet who is STILL considered "a continuing and authoritative source of truth". Some time ago I talked with an Adventist about this. He thought that, in the end, they'll end up ordaining women because it's not a question dealt by the GC directly, but by each union separately since it's them that perform the ordinations... Not sure if it's true. | ||

Yes, Hyveth Williams is an ordained pastor. She is the first pastor in the SDA church to be both black and female. |
