What are some books that really explain the New Covenant idea well? I'd like to have some books for my collection to refer to and my mom is an avid reader and doesn't understand my new (well, semi-new) beliefs. I'm thinking having a book to read will help her out. Also, other book suggestions are welcome too since I know there are a lot of former-SDA books that are good. I'm planning on starting a collection. | ||

Rain~ I think a good book to begin with is Dale Ratzlaf's "Sabbath in Christ". In this book he makes clear the distinctions between the old and new covenants. This book plus his other books are available to purchase from his web site. They are not very expensive either! ~mj~ | ||

I have Dale's book. I also have Greg Taylor's book Discovering the New Covenant. Both good. I just read Covenants & Blessings by Andrew Murray. I've had it on my shelf for years & God just led me to find it & read it. It was a confirmation of things for me. J9 | ||

J9~ I think it is important for "Formers" and people still in the adventist church that are considering leaving, to read other books from respected Christian authors that present the distinctions between the OT & NT Covenants. Between reading Dale Ratzlaf's books and these other authors, such as, Andrew Murray, that you suggested, is KEY to understanding where we stand "in" CHRIST after we are "born again" of the SPIRIT! ~mj~ | ||

Are there any suggestions for those types of books on the Covenants, that are not by former Adventists? I am trying to decide which book to send to my mother on the Covenants, and she might be turned off immediately if they're written by someone she sees as having an Anti-SDA agenda. | ||

Thank you all for the suggestions. I'll definitely grab Sabbath in Christ since it seems to have touched so many people here and most likely the others y'all have suggested, though maybe not all at once since I don't have a money tree in the backyard. | ||

Rain, Sabbath in Christ is important because it addresses all the SDA arguments we learned to bolster our defense of Sabbath. It walks through the covenants and addresses all the arguments as it goes. To me ...the best book that addresses the covenants>>> The Bible. Humans get so messed up by consulting outside sources to affirm and confirm their theological positions. The Bible is the only pure and complete source of discovery and confirmation of truth . ...Just my opinion ...Animal..go to the source of truth !! | ||

Good point, Animal. My mother (SDA) asked me the other day who told me to believe all this stuff (I was telling her about the covenants) and I told her it all started when I read Galatians. Of course there were seeds planted in my mind earlier, but the veil really started to be lifted with Galatians. | ||

I definitely agree about the Bible. Colossians 2 was the beginning of what did it for me, if I remember correctly. Then I read Galatians and Hebrews and was blown away. I just don't know if my mom can read the Bible without that SDA veil and maybe a book that spells it out, along with the Bible for wider context, will help. I also think having such books on hand will help me put into words what I believe much easier. I know what I believe, I know what I read, but I have trouble explaining it. | ||

The gospel of John plus this passage in Romans did it for me: What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised— who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. My mom has read the Bible through several times, at least once without any EGW, and then she went through again and read the EGW Conflict of the Ages series in tandem. I think she might be on her 3rd or 4th time through. So asking her to read Galatians or the other epistles doesn't help very much, because she's "done" that. | ||

Your mom is interpreting scripture through the lens of Ellen White. I did that when I was an Adventist - in one case taking both EGW and Scripture metaphorically because the Bible said the believer has been saved, while EGW said no one can say they're saved. Until I learned that EGW contradicted the Bible, I couldn't "see" that the SDA religion was false. (In my case learning that EGW said that Jesus waited until 1844 to go into the Most Holy Place while the Bible says that Jesus had gone already, was what did it - Hebrews 6:19-20; Hebrews 9:12,25; Hebrews 10:12 - what place can be holier than were God is?!) Keep praying for her! |
