I just read a book called "Bruchko" by Bruce Olson. It tells about how he went to live with a tribe of Indians in South America, learned their language and finally had the God-given opportunity to share the gospel with them. These particular Indians tied their hammocks to the rafters where they were suspended above the ground as they slept. He explained to one he had nicknamed "Bobby" because he couldn't pronounce his name: "Yes," I said. "You have to be suspended. That is how it is when you follow Jesus, Bobby. No man can tell you how to walk His trail. Only Jesus can. But to find out you have to tie your hammock strings into Him and be suspended in God." Of course, SDAs would have told them something different. Perhaps they would say: "as you get stronger and stronger from depending on the rafters, you will soon be able to take the place of the rafters. First you'll be able to support one end and then pretty soon you'll be able to suspend yourself!" And then when the Indians expressed discouragement, they would say: "don't worry as long as you're making progress. As long as you depend on the rafters to help you support yourself; as long as little by little you're suspending yourself more and more by depending on the rafters for strength, you'll be all right! But keep praying to the rafters for strength!" | ||

Wow, Asurprise, I bought that book last year at a garage sale! Haven't read it yet...so interesting that you mentioned it--I'd never heard of it. Have you all read "Peace Child"? It's an older book, but so excellent. | ||

I have "Peace Child" too! How disconcerting for the missionaries to discover that the natives they were trying to teach about Jesus, thought that Judas was the hero of the story because his was the ultimate betrayal!!! Yikes! I'm glad that God helped them find the perfect answer! | ||

Now these are both exciting true stories, but in case anyone likes Christian fiction also; I'd like to mention a Christian fiction story that tells the gospel through the vehicle of a really exciting fiction story. If anyone likes action adventure movies such as "The Bourne Identity," they will like "The Witness," by Josh McDowell. I really enjoyed it! | ||
