It occurred to me this morning to question why do Adventists quote "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath" so often to prove that we are required to keep the Sabbath? It seems to me that it means the opposite. At the very least, the way Adventist theology centers around the Sabbath, it sure does seem like they *really* believe that Man was made for the Sabbath. Just a thought... | ||

I never could figure that out either. You'd think Jesus meant what he said! I always got the feeling (from my SDA family) though, that the SDA system uses this verse to show that they don't idolize the sabbath. Not very honest when the church stands on the Sabbath. | ||

When I was an Adventist, I took it to mean, don't be legalistic about how you keep the Sabbath. It's a time for worship, not for stressing about rules. | ||

I was taught that it was a gift from God for man to have a day of rest from work. God never needed to rest so the day was for man - not God. I guess that still makes sense to me. Man does need rest and it's good to spend a day with God's people. The problem comes with making it a requirement and creating burdensome rules about how to keep it a day of rest. By the way, Sabbath was not usually a day a rest for me when I was in the church. Preparing for and cleaning up after potluck was a lot of work! Passing out stuff door to door was work! Sitting through lectures and seminars was tiring! | ||

Yes, Katarain. We saw that text, as we saw all our proof-texts, through the lens of a false worldview. We BELIEVED Sabbath was an eternal reality which God Himself was obligated to honor because it was part of His law...and we all knew that He, being God, honored His own law. So, we understood Sabbath to be an eternal reality that God honored. Thus we were expected to honor it as well...not because we were made for IT, but because just as we lived by the rule of gravity, we lived by God's law of holy time. But that was false. The law is NOT eternal reality. Only God is. He gave the law; He wrote it and summarized the essence of reality: if you sin, you die. Period. That was the function of the law. And Sabbath was the sign that Israel, for whom the law was made, accepted God as their sovereign. It was their obligation as dependent, covenant people. Now I see that God, including the man Jesus, is eternal...and He is OVER the law, not subject to it. He is OVER the sabbath, not morally bound to "keep" it. It's a completely new paradigm. No longer do I see God and Law as eo-existing eternal entities. I see God as eternal and sovereign, and He is over the law and every other creation. Colleen | ||

My grandmother seemed to be always working, working, working when she was alive. She just changed the kind of work she did when Sabbath rolled around. Then she was out giving Bible studies.... (come to think of it SDA "Bible studies" ask all the questions and answer with their "proof texts" taken out of context. No wonder my SDA relatives don't want me to show them anything from the Bible... They must think the Bible can be made to say anything a person wants because they don't truly study the Bible. They just take verses out of context - "proof texts." If only they'd listen to what the Bible REALLY says!) From the way she lived, Grandma never rested in Christ. If she never really accepted Jesus as her Savior, then her busy life on earth was the only heaven she had.  | ||
