I've considered myself non-Adventist for about a year now come October. However, being a book hoarder, I've kept the small library of Adventist books that have been given to me over the years. I'd never really read most of them but had referenced some of them every blue moon as an SDA. I'd moved the books to my closet when I decided SDA was no longer for me, but hadn't gotten rid of them. I'm happy to say most of those books are now up on Amazon.com for sale at a steal. I couldn't find a listing for two of them and the last one my Aunt gave to me as a gift and, while I haven't read it and never plan to, I'm not sure I want to get rid of it. She's pretty much dying and if anything it's more the fact it was a gift from her than that it's an EGW book. Some of them were my parents' books too, so I just stuck those in the living room. I didn't want to sell something that wasn't mine, after all. That's what I've been up to the last hour or so. I'm thinking about inserting something in each book to get the buyers thinking. I recognize that making money off of SDA literature might not seem right. I just couldn't in good conscience burn books nor donate them to Goodwill for people to stumble across. | ||

Thank you for sharing the next step in the separation process! It felt so freeing to me when I finally let go of those red books and also the tapes my dad sent to me ( Lonnie somebody) the books I had were marked up from study so I got to pitch them ALL :-) there was such a wash of peace over me! And good for you to not release them on unsuspecting browsers in the goodwill store- you have to be fairly intentional to seek this stuff out---unless you are being deceived by a revelation seminar:-) | ||

Rain, I understand. We actually did burn our EGW books; we decided we didn't want to run the risk of anybody finding them in the dump or at the recycling center...and if they were the work of evil, as we believe them to be, we needed to get rid of them. Others have recycled theirs, given them away, and some even mail them to a couple of different apologists who are creating libraries of SDA literature. It was hugely freeing for us to pitch those books!! (Not to mention that it freed up a LOT of bookshelf space!) Colleen | ||

I think it would be good to burn Adventist books rather than let any fall into the hands of people who would be decieved by them!  | ||

Acts 19:19 tells about how those who had formerly practiced magic brought their books together and burned them and how the total price of those books amounted to "fifty thousand pieces of silver." | ||

One good thing about putting them on Amazon is that you are selling to someone who is already searching for and wants that book. At least they don't have to purchase it new and support the publisher. | ||

Asurprise thank you for Acts 19:19- wish I Had burned them- I went through a process of going through all my books and belongings to clean out ANY thing that concerned mysticism of any sort and even had to get rid of a pair of earrings my husband gave to me because of their symbolism - wish I could have burned everything but if someone goes to my city landfill to shop well....they need deliverance! :-) Yes, Skeeter, I think it was melishenko- a whole set... He used to listen to them over and over and wanted me to do the same- I couldn't do it... | ||

I had scores of SDA stuff until recently going back to around 2905. I packed all of it and mailed it to Colleen. She may not need more as duplicates would not be practical but you could contact her first and go over the inventory. The first book I sent her I got at around age 7. It was called, 'Jennifer Meets a Prophit". About a little girl ago is awe-struck about having the honor of meeting EGW. I wanted Colleen to have that book because SDA's will tell you they dont think of EGW as a profit but my book was printed by Pacific Press so they do. | ||

Wow I want to thank you on this forum! I felt a sudden conviction this morning to go through my books again and found some by Thomas Merton, Henri Nowen, Thomas a Kempis - stuff I had forgotten about and because they weren't overtly occultish or SDA had left in my library .... I was convicted as soon as I wrote that I had let go of books on mysticism... The pruning continues! | ||

Maybe I'll do just that, Punababe, and email Colleen a list. I don't have anything really remarkable and quite frankly I don't see anyone purchasing most of it online except the Revelation commentary since it's a standard textbook at Andrews, I think. Mostly it was stuff given to me over the years that I never read. Like I implied earlier, the burning of books makes the bookworm in me squirm because I feel that the content can be used for some good in the right hands. Getting it to those hands and out of mine is the trick. Cool, Rocky. I'm glad I brought something up that was useful to someone else. |
