I am studying Ezekiel this summer and came across something interesting about the word remnant. As I delved more deeply into scripture I began to realize a nuance about the word "remnant" that I had learned in Adventism.

In the KJV the word translated "remnant" in Ezekiel 6:8 is "yathar" from a primitive root "to remain or be left". Other versions of the Bible like the ESV translates this Hebrew understanding as "I will leave some of you alive." This fits with the context of Ezekiel.

Interesting, huh?! Remnant is a group that is left - alive. Here is my ah, ha. I have always understood remnant as a group that did something - like keep the commandments of Jesus. What they did gave them the distinguishing feature "remnant". Not true ... remnant is passive ... it is not a group that does something ... rather they are a group that receives something. They don't do something, but are acted upon ... left over.

In Adventism I understood the meaning of remnant as a group that kept the commandments of Jesus (Rev. 14:12). And what they did gave them the right to be the remnant. Yet, Adventism misses the context of the verse in Rev. 14 ... Rev. 14:4 - "These have been redeemed from mankind as first fruits for God and the Lamb." They are a group that is redeemed by God's actions.

Remnant ... left over ... not a prideful group, because of something they do ... but a thankful group that has been redeemed from destruction ...

I have more thoughts to write later.

I am a thankful, grateful, overwhelmed by my being "acted upon" remnant.

These are some great Spirit-led insights and just another example of how Adventism misinterprets Scripture and misapplies the gospel at every turn! The way you described "remnant" is completely consistent with the true meaning of grace. I think of remnant carpet or pieces of fabric from a sewing project... They are just the "leftovers" that did nothing to become the remnant pieces. Powerful insights that helped give me a little more sense of joy and freedom in Christ today. Thanks for sharing!

Jrt, that is a great insight! Wow...I hadn't thought of that! So, so true. God leaves some of them alive.

Adventism completely gutted God's sovereignty. Oh, they'd say, perhaps, that He is a sovereign God. But they didn't mean that. Ultimately, the "Adventist God" puts His own sovereignty on hold to defer to to us sinners and to give us "freedom". Huh?

How does one who is spiritually dead have any freedom at all?

God preserves the remnant; they don't preserve themselves!
