http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sylvester_Graham Sylvester Graham was a health reformist in the early 1800's. It seems pretty clear that Ellen White "borrowed" many of his ideas. Does anyone know if she (or the White Estate) ever gave Dr. Graham any credit for all the ideas she borrowed from him...not to mention other health reformers of her time and even before her time? What do SDAs say about Sylvester Graham? I'm curious because I had never heard of him until today. Thanks, Kristen |

Kristen, Graham crackers were named after its inventor, Sylvester Graham. However, his Graham crackers were sugar-free, but the name "Graham" has remained constant to enhance sales. Thus, giving modern-day Graham crackers an aura of healthfulness akin to a health food. Moreover, Sylvester Graham had unusual and/or radical sexual views. Ellen White unashamedly plagiarized alot of views from these early American health reformers. Ellen White often used the phrase "I saw" to make it appear that she actually received this information directly from the throne of God. In short, she supposedly made "inspired" writings out of uninspired, sensational material of her day. Graham, Coles, and others received no recognition or credit from Ellen White nor from SDAs today. Dr. Ronald Numbers covers this topic very well in his 1976 book entitled "Prophetess of Health." Dennis Fischer (Message edited by Dennis on May 12, 2010) |

Thanks for the info, Dennis. Here is part of wikipedia's article: "Sylvester Graham focused on meat and milk, which he believed to be the cause of sexual urges. In fact, he claimed animal byproducts produced lust; Grahamism thus rejected meat, animal byproducts, and alcohol in order to develop a purer mind and body. Graham believed that adhering to the diet would prevent people from having impure thoughts and in turn would stop masturbation (thought by Graham to be a catalyst for blindness) among other things." Sound familiar??? |

Hmmm--once more the "prophetess" seems to have reflected merely the ideas of her time...amazing how that works. Colleen |
