From the same booklet published by Pacific Press. "By Him it [the Sabbath] was set apart as a memorial of the work of creation. It points to Him as both the Creator and Sanctifier. It [the Sabbath] declares that....by His power we are reconciled to God,"--Ellen White, The Desire of Ages, p.288. So it's the Sabbath declaring that thru Christ's power we are reconciled to God? And here all the time I thought it was His blood that did that. And it is really a result of Christ's power, anyway? Surfy | ||

So then it's all about the sabbath? Why do they even bother with Jesus-if in fact the sabbath reconciles us to God? Odd and creepy | ||

You're right--Adventism (and Ellen is the "source") downplay the necessity and sufficiency of Jesus' blood. In Adventism, the blood is not enough to complete the atonement. Sabbath is the replacement for the sufficiency of Jesus' blood and for the sealing power of the Holy Spirit. Sabbath is, in effect, an idol within Adventist theology. Colleen | ||

They are partly right, the Sabbath was pointing to Jesus, who came as a child and lived and died and became that gift of Sabbath Rest. So to the adventist, the 7th day is still the thing to worship. As a Christian, Christ has replaced it and fulfilled it and made the "Sabbath" something real instead of just a shadow pointing to the future!!! | ||

Just thought I would share an analogy of the shadow/Jesus. I shared it on here years ago when I was a daily visitor. When our Sheltie was a puppy he started chasing the shadows of birds and butterflies (and basketballs!). He still does it! When he goes out the door--he's looking for the shadows on the ground. One particular day, he had chased this butterflies shadow off and on for probably 15 minutes. The butterfly would come and go. Everytime it's shadow returned our dog was in hot pursuit. Then, something different happened. Suddenly, without any warning, the shadow disappeared. The butterfly had landed right in front of him. I really expected for him to bite at the butterfly. He didn't. He didn't realize that the butterfly was what had created the shadow. In his brain their was no connection. He gave the butterfly a puzzled look and immediately began looking for the shadow. Of course, this little scenario occasionally repeats itselfs and it always reminds me of how Christ is the substance of the shadow. Hope you all have a wonderful day!! Lori | ||

Wow, Lori! Thank you! Here's a quote by Gem Fitch, contemporary writer of an SDA hymn about the Sabbath ("The Crowning Jewel of Creation"): ""However, I feel if it is viewed in the light of being the most precious gift the Lord has bestowed on us for all time and eternity, then it will draw people to realize how gracious and loving the Lord is, and not a tyrant who is just waiting for people to step over the line." (This quote is made right after she says "It was never created as a test, though we know it will be the final issue in the battle between the forces of good and evil.") pg. 393, "Companion to the SDA Hymnal", 1988. At that time it was #385 in the SDA hymnal--have no idea if it's still in the current hymnal. |
