My FIL wears suspenders instead of belts because Ellen said people should not bind the waist or let heavy clothes hang on the hips. Richard said that as a boy in school, he also had to wear suspenders for the same reason. Great point about legalism, Dennis! Colleen |

I remember that my grandmother wore pants under her dress - but I think that was just for working in her big garden and around the house - not in town! It probably would have been unthinkable to her to have just worn pants! (It makes me tired to think of her - always busy, always working at some task, never resting. On Sabbath she just changed the kind of work she did - playing the piano or organ for church and giving Bible studies!) |

I read some of the web site and I have a question about it. The mentality is so similar to the Islamic mentality behind wearing the burkah - that men's impulses are so hard to control that it's the responsibility of women to cover themselves to make it easier for men to control themselves. Hmmm...somehing about that just doesn't sit right with me. If we are to take this premise to its logical conclusion, women shouldn't even be allowed to be on the same planet with men. |

*hee* *hee* I think we females should all move to the planet Venus and put up a huge sign in space that says, "No Men Allowed! Stay on earth and stay out of trouble!" |

My SDA mother, now deceased, always wore a dress on the farm in western North Dakota--summer or winter. Yes, she even respected the cows in the barn at milking time, during the cold winter months, by wearing woolen pants under her plain cotton dress. Life was harsh on the prairie with no indoor plumbing nor a central heating system. We eventually had the first wind-charged, 32 volt electrical system in our community. Somehow the wind charger/batteries attracted lightning bolts right at the window near my bed that caused the electrical box door to suddenly burst open. Oh yes, if there was no wind for several days, we had to hand pump our deep well for the cattle to have water. My mom did manage to own an electric butter churn. Precious memories or thoughts that ache? Dennis Fischer |

I think we'd have more success sending men to Mars. The atmosphere of Venus can melt metal! |

I already have an answer for myself but interested in what others think. I teach in a public school and we have dress codes for the students. The codes relate to types of shirts and tops and also relate to pants for both boys and girls. I smile sometimes when I note that the codes are sometimes less strictly enforced for the middle and high school students. I guess my question is about the place of restrictions and yes even "codes" in public that we can expect of others. Where do we draw the line and who sets it in public? Richard PS: I came up through the SDA school system including college so I'm well aware of what everyone is sharing. rtruitt@mac.com |

IF God hadn't wanted me to chasem, he would have given them a couple extra legs. It ain't the chasen'em that causes trouble anyhow, it's the catchen'em is when the trouble starts. The scripture used to read, 'Life is short and full of women.' They had to rewrite it to read, life is short and full of trouble. God made some women pleasant to look at, the rest ain't worth havin'. |

Richard, I understand your point well. I do not have a problem with school dress codes or even with school uniforms. i believe, though, that dress codes that are attached to unbiblical beliefs affect kids differently from dress codes that are born out of social norms (no "gang clothing", goth accoutrements, etc). The problem I have with the "Modest Dress" site and links is that those recommendations are a denial of femininity and assume that women in pants or in dresses that show the lower leg, arms, or waistline are in sin. The message is quite different from asking students to wear uniforms or clothes of their own reflecting classic styles that transcend pop culture. HonestWitness, Ellen White said that women were not to excite their husbands' passions by undressing in front of them. Marital relations were to be kept to a minimum, thus conserving vital energy helping the men to transcend their natural animal instincts. She also said that, during the "foot washing" ceremony before taking communion, wives were not to allow their husbands to wash their feet because that act might excite them. Women were to wash women's feet, and men were to wash men's. I thought for years that it seemed she protested way too much.... Colleen |

Quote: HonestWitness, Ellen White said that women were not to excite their husbands' passions by undressing in front of them. Marital relations were to be kept to a minimum, thus conserving vital energy helping the men to transcend their natural animal instincts. (End quote) If the wives don't excite the their husbands passion, I can personally gar-on-tee you, some other woman will. When the marital relations hit a minimum, the man eyes start roaming at a maximum. It don't help him to transcend his animal instincts, it mere redirects them. Sides all that we ain't animals. I not only think she protested to much, I think that old woman didn't have the common sense of a turnip. River |

Colleen, I wasn't aware of EGW's instructions that wives should not undress in front of their husbands. GEE WHIZ! That's INSANE! I think I'll share that with my SDA husband. As far as I know, he is not aware of that teaching from EGW either. Do you know where I can find that quote? |

What gets me is tv portrays men as shallow, and I understand it makes good copy for comedy relief. I like comedy, but I got enough sense to separate comedy from real world. But for a woman who is supposedly a woman of God to write that men have animal passions and instincts like we are dogs in any serious vein goes beyond the pale of anything near close to Godly. I got news for egw and her ilk. I am a spiritual leader in my home, when it comes down to where the rubber meets the road, I am dedicated to my wife, my family, I guard them with all watchfulness against all who would hurt them. I treat my wife with respect, care, admiration and am faithful to the bone. I don’t ride rough shod over her, but in all things, take her feelings into consideration on all matters. I don’t have anything to prove to this world, I am responsible to God and him only, and not to the likes of egw, and her ilk. Further more I consider her writings as of the deepest unprovoked insults ever fostered onto God and man. Not only that, she has brought shame on women of honor and common sense. Now I’m going to work before I get real upset. River |

What with all this talk about how Adventist women should dress I went to my old family photos and published some on Facebook. Check them out. Note: Jan and I just left off visiting with Mr. & Mrs. River. This is the first time ever for me to access the internet with my laptop computer in a motel. We are on our way to the FAF conference and plan on being with Handmaiden and Asuprise tomorrow night. Fearless Phil |

One more thing: Wearing proper dresses didn't seem to stop my grandparents, Sherman Chandler & Myrtle Harris. She became pregnant three time in three years on the mission field for a total of nine children. As I recall, grandmother is the one with all the "passion". When not employeed as a nurse, granddad always wore logger jeans and bib overalls, so he to was always properly covered. Fearless Phil |

Hey Junior, I hope you don't think all we feed here is chicken. Bout every time Phil comes down, I have fed him Kentucky chicken. The office was a mad house Friday, the computer was down, and after I worked on it, I called out an expert, he only charges 80 bucks and hour and he is a bargain! Next time I say, "I'll fix it." Just shoot me on the spot! I wake up this morning wanting to up-grade some parts on my bike, and...you guessed it, they had sent the wrong parts, and may the bird of paradise fly up their beak, cause they'll be lucky if I don't kick'em into the middle of next week. Do I sound upset? I'm not upset! I love broken offices, broken computers and missing parts, reordering, shipping back, en chasing drug dealers over 60 square acres. I'm a happy camper! River |

River, What! Well, at least it wasn't "Arky Chicken" otherwise known as roadkill. Hey, when you do catch up with that bald headed drug dealer, tie him to that tree down in Meadow Glade that I pulled the hooker around. By the time he gets loose he should be an honest man. Of course if you were to duck tape his mouth shut full of fry-chek, he might.... Fearless Phil |
