Boy oh boy! They opened a can of worms for themselves by claiming to be non-denominational. I am waiting to see how long it will be before the gay activists get a bead on this and take them to court like they did the boy scouts for not allowing gay children to join or are they going to let them join? They have always stayed out of the lime-light but now it looks like they have painted a target on their back.
There is a saying that those who walk quiet carry big sticks. Richard you must of carried an awefully big stick to get removed from pathfinders, haha.
Colleen, while Richard was a pastor bu any chance did he ever head a Pathfinders group?

Gail, Richard was never a pastor. He's a graphic artist, and his career has always been in graphics. It's amazing how God wastes nothing and redeems everything we give Him—God has brought Richard a completely new calling—Life Assurance Ministries—that uses not only his graphics skill but also his administrative talent and all the understanding that came from his PUC degree in public relations. God is good.
No, he never headed a Pathfinder group!

I HATED Pathfinders. I was one of those kids who had an awkward personality and therefore rarely "fit in" with the rest of the kids.
Adventist kids, like worldly kids, are usually focused on themselves and how they fit in. (I was no exception though. I was an "good" Adventist and therefore wasn't saved.) I noticed that Adventist kids formed cliques and unpopular kids were excluded.
Looking back, I just feel sorry for those kids. Un-saved people who haven't accepted Jesus' finished work cannot BE good. They don't have the Holy Spirit dwelling within them. If only Adventists could realize their lack of the Holy Spirit. If they've never experienced His Presence, they don't know what they're missing. |

Yes, Surfy--they are Veggie Scouts  . We ALWAYS had to be separate because of Sabbath; it would have been impossible to have SDA kids participate on Fri. night or Saturday in any of the Scout activities. And Enoch, interestingly enough re: the LLU mention you made--I was just told yesterday that there is a very high population of Mormon students attending med school, dental school there. (Makes sense, esp. dietarily). |

I don't think Adventists understand what non-denominational means. It certainly doesn't mean that it is open to all. As someone who spent 7+ years in Pathfinders it is obviously directly tied to a denomination. |

The LDS-SDA connection also makes sense in the area of extrabiblical (parascriptural or extracanonical) authority, revelation, and writings. Therefore, they can not be considered to be true Protestants who uphold the Reformation battle cry of "sola scriptura."

At least the Mormons are honest about it: They are clear that the believe in an open canon. SDAs claim to believe sola scriptura and then violate it with FB #18. In fact, the wording of FB #18 explicitly says the Adventsts' basis for believing in the Bible is that Ellen White said to. EGW, then, is not merely a secondary "authoritative source of truth" for Adventists, but their primary one. |

My ex (a pathfinder director) actually told me that pathfinders was intended to be an alternative to boy scouts/girl scouts to protect their kids from 'worldly' influences. |

I hated the whole Pathfinders thing too! I never did learn how to tie those knots! Hated the marching, the uniforms, the camping trips... |

Our kids had a lot of fun, because they are real socialites. But there were times!!! Like the time they went camping when it snowed, they had to sit around and do dumb stuff on Sabbath while they waited for the sun to go down, until they could play in the snow.
Then, on their way to the last Oshkosh camporee, we forgot to send lunches with our kids on the way to the airport. So they stopped at McDonalds, across the street from a Taco Bell, and one of the leaders took their money and went and bought them a burgerless "sandwich." Bun with cheese (they hate that kind of cheese), pickle, lettuce -- whatever. They were so hungry! Still makes me mad to think of it. Let them have a burrito with some protein!!!

I loved Pathfinders: The meetings, camping, crafts, nature everything. It had a very positive influence on my life. I am a bird watcher with a life list that starts from Pathfinders. My husband and I started out tent camping, progressed to a trailer for several years, and graduated to a 36' motor home. My favorite places to stay are in the forest parks. It reminds me of wonderful times. Last year we took a 6 month trip in it. I did get some good things out of Adventism. |
