Hi y'all, I just turned away a young man who was selling books "on a donation basis" door to door to help himself get through school. The books were geared mainly toward children and teens. When he handed them to me, I immediately looked for the publishing company, which was Pacific Press. You guessed it, SDA. I wonder if this is a new way of getting the SDA "word" out there, or has this been going on for a long time? In any case, head's up! Leigh Anne |

I haven't heard about the "donation basis", but my niece sold EGW books last summer there in So. Calif. She may have said it was for school expenses, but I think she used hers to help her buy a car. She also went door to door. She made quite a bit of money... I think over $1,000. So sad she made that much money on them. |

No I didn't Diana. I started to, but looked at the publisher name inside the book instead. He was a real sweet, soft-spoken guy, and I felt sad for him having to go door to door. On the other hand, it felt like another secret scheme like the Revelation Seminars. Instead of just coming right out and saying "I'm from the SDA church and we're selling these books to help us through SDA school", he asked if I was a Christian and said these books are great for kids. Sigh. At least now I know to pray for this kid. Leigh Anne |

I can understand that. It sounds like deception. I am sure he was told to say that. So, we continue to pray for all Adventists. Diana L |

They have been doing this every since I can remember. I was a conference literature envangelist and they even told us that if we couldn't make a sale then go for the free book-donation approach. |

I was also a literature evangelist one summer, and when the above didnt work, we gave them paperback Steps to Christ books and asked for a 1.00 donation to "help with gas". Thats when gas was less than 1.00 a gallon. Thats how we made our spending money for the summer--light bulb moment--another thing I need to repent of--the outright lies/deception. |

All this triggered a memory about the one year I sent to church school. We were going ingathering and were told to tell people that the money would be used to help pay for blind kids go to camp. I was only 12 at the time so I don't know if that was true or not. But it sure brought in a lot of money. |
