This morning driving home from work I was listening to the local religious radio station. The speaker was talking about tongues. He told of a gathering at a Big Bear Lake hotel. During one of the their sessions one of the folks there started speaking in tongues. The leader of the group told the man that because there was no one to translate to please not continue. Connected to the room they were in was a bar with a bar tender behind the bar. After the meeting broke up, the bar tender went to the leader with tears streaming down his eyes. He told the leader that the man who was speaking in tongues was speaking in Persian, which was his native language. He said the man speaking in tongues was praising God. Because of this the bar tender became a Christ follower.
Just wanted to share this with all of you.
I have not studied the subject of tongues. I have read pro and con, but as I said, I have not studied it for myself.

Hey Diana,

I've heard several different stories that sounded very similar to this one. Some might think that would mean they're all fake or re-tellings of one story, but I've heard them with different details and by people who weren't that far from the original sources. So I think it means that this kind of thing has happened more than once!

In Jack Hayford's book about tongues ("The Beauty of Spiritual Language"), he also has a similar personal testimony of speaking in tongues in a foreign country when in a deliverance ministry time (praying & casting a spirit out of someone).

I remember reading one lady's blog years ago who grew up in a pentecostal church. When she was young she actually didn't know what "tongues" were or sounded like to most of us, because her spiritual gift of interpretation seemed to always be "on" while she was growing up. In other words, when the church was praying & praising in tongues, she heard English! It wasn't until much later that she realized people could not always understand what was being said when "tongues" were being spoken.

God works in mysterious ways!

In His grip,
Ramone

My husband's grandfather has a very similar story. It happened to him while he was preaching, and had on idea what he had said. No interpretation came, so he went back to preaching. Afterward a couple came up to him and the man said his wife was German (did not speak much English) and she wanted to know more about what he had said! Not an every day occurrence for him, but very awesome!

A couple returning from Mexico came to our church back in the 70's said one of the group spoke in tongues in a church service and a Mexican lady came to her in tears and said she told her things.

The only thing was that lady that spoke in tongues didn't speak spanish, the missionary that did said she spoke perfect Spanish.
I remember the lady telling about it, but I may have the details wrong, it was a long time ago and I don't know how true it was.

One day I was praying in tongues and I recognized distinct names from the new testament, I don't know where it was that or not. Kind of weird though and not something I will ever forget.

I read a book quite recently which documents quite a lot of cases from all over the world of tongues being spoken in a recognisable language and being understood by someone present. I read a German version, here are the details: Harris, Ralph W., Wenn der Geist redet…, Leuchter-Verlag EG, Erzhausen, 1974

The original is in English though, the title means "When the Spirit speaks..." Perhaps it is still available.

There is a local case I heard about too. When the Pentecostal revival came to Hungary in the mid 1920s, a lot of the Baptist people accepted the teaching and began to practice speaking in tongues. There was a church in a village up in the Bakony hills, not far from where I now live, where this started happening, but the pastor was opposed to it and tried to stop it. A young girl, who only spoke Hungarian, then gave a message in tongues. Apparently she spoke in Russian, which the pastor understood, as he had been a prisonner of war there, and the Lord told him in this manner to stop resisting the work of the Holy Spirit. From that point on, he accepted the "new" teaching.

This sort of thing has not happened to me, even though I do understand several modern lanaguages, but it has happened to at least three people I know personally, so I suppose that is closer than being an "urban legend".

When I speak in tongues, the language seems to change depending on whether I give a message in tongues, or am praying about various things. One sounds rather Chinese, with monosyllables, tones and weird vowel sounds, whereas another has got clicks like an African language.
I can definitely recognise the name of Jesus in various different forms.

Ramone,
There is a Gypsy lady in our church here, who has come from a very rough background and only speaks Hungarian, and she says she can understand what people are saying when they speak in tongues. Most people don't take any notice of her, poor thing. Interesting, anyway!
