No hard feelings George. We're a family around here. 
It's funny. I'm a "never-been" and have eaten shellfish and pork all my life. I exercise regularly, have low BP, my weight is normal. I thank God for my good health, but know that biblically, it's not a requirement of my faith. On the other hand, my in-laws are conservative SDAs and of course with the "Health Message" avoid all the "bad" stuff according to EGW. I think the key (and the most common sense) is moderation. Even tho' my in-laws don't eat unclean meats and many are vegetarians, they are morbidly obese, diabetic and take medication for high blood pressure. (Lot's of carbs in their diets).
I'm still learning a lot here, and I know there are (life long SDA) formers who might be discovering things about their upbringings and need to just talk about it. No one is trying to do any bashing (except for maybe false Christian doctrines!)

Speaking of eating anything we want, I have found out the hard way that too many legumes (soy, etc.) can cause kidney stones. After I spent over $1000 out of pocket for lithotripsy, I went back to cow's milk. My "not-milk" SDA husband had to swallow all those little sermonettes he gave me about how cow's milk is so bad for you and how soy milk is better.
Now, I have found out I have osteopoenia, which is a precursor to osteoporosis. So my bones are dissolving, and I'm not even dead yet! I did some research and discovered that too much sodium leaches calcium out of the bones.
Do you know what the food with the highest known sodium content is? According to www.nutritiondata.com, it's Morningstar Farms Veggie Dogs. Hubby buys those all the time. I won't touch them any more.
And something I've always wondered about is poison mushrooms and food allergies. Obviously, I can't make a blanket statament that God has no restrictions at all on what can safely be eaten.
I can't make the scriptures that have been quoted in this thread apply equally to every plant or animal on this planet. Nor can I apply them to every single person ever created. There are exceptions to every rule.

I remember years ago, when I was about 12 or 13, I had this big question to the people at the SDA church: if mushrooms, biologically speaking, are not plants (their cells are somehow more similar to animal cells than to plant cells, although they actually belong to a different category of living beings, the Fungi kingdom), why is it that they were so commonly eaten by the people at the church?
As far as I can remember, I didn't get any satisfactory answer and people struggled to find something to say. |

I knew some people who did not eat mushrooms for this very reason - not to mention that they reportedly thought that mushrooms were slugs in a different part of their life-cycle. |

lets not forget about vitamin B12 defiencey because we lack meat in our diet that EGW did not warn us about,I had a serious defiencey in this,it caused havoc on my system. some vegetarins seem to not be bothered by this and good for them,but my body could not. I am now on the right track by eating meat and taking a supplement. |

But mostly, I've learrned to just be thankful for my food, even if I can't "afford" organic, free-range etc.. etc.. and trust God. I don't think He wants me to obsess over my food when half the people on the planet don't even have enough. So glad to not have to "worry" about it all anymore.

Slugs? As part of a Mushroom cycle? I'm still trying to wrap my mind around that one!
Besides, escargot is mighty tasty if cooked in garlic butter. Add a side of sliced, fried mushrooms, a little wine...and I'm happy! |

Ha, Sondra & Phil! I'll go you one better. When I lived in L.A. for a summer with some guys, our telephone number was "666-8255" which we eventually realized spelled, "666-TALK"!
Of course, being faithfully cyncial backslidden Adventists, we got an incredible kick out of it. I think I recorded a deep-voiced message for the answering machine. Adventist boys will be Adventist boys... |

P.S. You know, sadly, some people in churches would truly be worried about that. Many are focused on precisely that kind of thing, looking for that kind of "mark" to come, unaware that just like the "seal of God", it begins in the heart first before it shows up anywhere outside. |

You know, I believe a lot of people are superstitious about that number. Every once in a while I'll ring up 666 if I'm buying frozen yogurt. While the cashier and I make a face over it, it always turns into a laugh.
So there you go. I've combined food with 666. Glad I didn't veer off topic!

Back in 2000 I bought a nice VW Jetta, dealer licensed it for me and I went on my way. Few days later I was loading some gifts in the truck, we were going to a family party. This is the first time I looked at my license plate, it was 666. I felt very uncomfortable driving it, as some people actually gave me dirty looks, thinking I'm an atheist trying to make a statement and mock Christians. Had to wait about month and a half before new plates could be issued... |

When we move to Battleground, the first three phone numbers they tried to give us was....you guessed it, 666, my wife says 'you ain't giving me that number and she argued with them until they searched for a number that had just been disconnected which is a 687 number.

I don't know why this is so funny. But it is.
I think it must have something to do with becoming truly more secure that our salvation is in JESUS CHRIST, not in superstitions about numbers. "666" in Revelation is not mentioned for the purpose of making us superstitious or jittery every time we see the number somewhere. It really causes a lot of judgment sometimes, doesn't it! And then in reverse, "rebellious" folks take it an use it as a symbol just to be perverse. I think they would have far less to work with if we (Christians) weren't so jumpy about it.
Whatever the "mark" is, it begins INSIDE of you, not on your skin. Jesus said that we are defiled from the inside-out, not from the outside-in! Remember how He said that about FOOD?

Jesus said that it is not what we swallow that makes us unclean, but what is in our hearts and what comes out of us. How much more true is this of a government "mark"!! If our family pinned us down against our will and stamped us on the forehead, would we then be lost? Of course not! Rather, the "mark" in Revelation is one that begins INSIDE and eventually manifests outside.
In the same way, the "seal of God" (the Holy Spirit) is something that starts on the inside, in our hearts. Sometimes He manifests outwardly, but you can't judge by the outward appearance who "has the Spirit" and who "does not". The important thing is WHAT GOD SEES. With the "mark of the beast" it is the same --what GOD sees is paramount. What He sees in our hearts is the main factor, and that is something that He can see long before any government issues a physical "mark". (For a parallel of this see Ezekiel 9).
On the final funny note for me here, I'll mention that the area code for Osaka city (where I live) is "06-6"... so there are a lot of numbers with "06-6" at the beginning, and a lot of numbers with "06-66..." in them! Including where I work now!

I used to tell Adventists that the mark of the beast was the garage sale sign, because it was so prevelent on Saturdays, and really makes a guy want to pull over, and go look.

One day I got a call from a guy I had contracted some construction clean up for. He wanted to know where I was... I thought it was the next day he needed me. So I rush out the door, already pretty late. I have to stop and get supplies and it totals $6.66. I get to the job, and before I have even done a single thing, I seriously gash my finger open with a brand new razor blade. The homeowner kindly asks me if she can get me a bandaid. I tell her it's kinda past that. I have to drive myself to the corner drug store for first aid supplies and bandage myself in the store bathroom - while almost tossing my cookies at the sight of the wound which I discovered was very long and deep. (don't ask how I managed this injury.. it would take too long to explain and your doubts about my IQ would be confirmed.) The contractor calls me while I'm there - (the homeowner has already called him) to see if I'm okay... so wondering if my humiliation will make the 10:00 news as well.
..... true story. But I'm not superstitious... really.
