George Knight, the SDA historian, estimates that 200-500 Millerite "prophets" existed in the late 1840s. Moreover, five women were "prophesying" in Ellen White's home town. This prophet craze was a great annoyance to William Miller who never embraced any of them. The following letter reveals what Ellen White thought about this prophet craze: quote:These men and women were deceived and deluded...In the past they had been blessed with a consciousness that they had a knowledge of the truth, and they had accomplished much good; but [now] Satan was molding the work. (Letter 132 (1900), quoted in Arthur White's Ellen White: The Early Years (1827-1862), page 68).
In addition to Ellen White's comments about these apostatized prophets, here is a brief listing of what really happened in 1844: * Joseph Smith, together with his brother Hyrum, were murdered on June 27, 1844 in the jail in Carthage, Illinois. *Pope Gregory XVI issued a strong Encyclical against all Bible societies (http://www.ewtn.com/library/encyc/g16inter.htm) A must-read for all history buffs. *Persian Prophet The Bab announced his revelations, founding Babism on May 23, 1844. *YMCA was founded in London. *First telegram is sent by Samuel F. B. Morse from Baltimore to Washington, D. C., saying "What hath God wrought?" *Oregon becomes a State. *Friedrich Nietzche was born on October 15, 1844. The "God is Dead" man died in a state of complete insanity in 1900. *Charles Goodyear receives patent for vulcanization, a process to strengthen rubber. *Dominican Republic gains independence from Haiti. *Oscar I of Sweden-Norway is crowned king of Sweden. *University of Notre Dame receives its charter from Indiana on May 15, 1844. *Last pair of Great Auks is killed in July, 1844. *Copper and iron ore discovered on the Upper Peninsula, beginning the Michigan Mining industry. Many readers will be able to add to this unique list to give a rounded perspective of happenings in 1844. Dennis Fischer |

John Tyler, Jr. was the U. S. President during the Millerite "Great Disappointment." He was a slaveholder for his entire life. The city of Tyler, Texas is named after him. His final words were "I am going now, perhaps it is for the best." The Presidential election in 1844 was the last to be held on different days in different States. Democrat James Polk defeated Whig Henry Clay. Dennis Fischer (Message edited by Dennis on January 17, 2009) |

Amazingly, John Tyler, the 10th President of the United States, still has a living grandson, Harrison Ruffin Tyler. President Tyler was born in 1790, one of his sons (Lyon Gardiner Tyler) was born in 1853, and his son Harrison was born in 1928, and is now about 80 years old and still living! Jeremy |

In 1841, President William Harrison made such a long-winded inaugural speech in cold weather that he died about a month later from pneumonia--creating a sudden vacancy and succession problems. Harrison's Vice President, John Tyler, Jr., became the 10th U. S. President after some disarray about succession. Subsequent inaugural addresses have been much shorter to accommodate the cold, Washington, D. C., winter temperatures. It is likely that President-elect Obama will follow the same brevity tradition next Tuesday. Dennis Fischer |

Dennis, thank you for putting up that parenthetical note about the "Encyclical" above. Truly frightening... or rather, it's frightening to realize how often we are afraid to let the Holy Spirit do His work through the Scriptures without our institutional, pastoral, priestly, or theological interference. Evangelism, just like salvation, involves resting in Him to carry out what He said He would do. |

Ramone, I found it rather blunt, daring, and scary for a popular Catholic website to publish Pope Gregory's 1844 Encyclical against Bible societies and support for forbidden book lists. No wonder there was such an anti-Catholic outcry in nineteenth-century America. It is important to note that this Encyclical has never been rescinded by the Vatican hierarchy. In the same century, the First Vatican Council in 1870 defined the new Papal infallibility dogma. Dennis Fischer www.bereanbeacon.org |
