Do you think there has been any change from this statement of 1914? At first they present subjects which will offend no one till they gain the confidence of the people. Gradually they introduce their peculiar dogmas, then come out more boldly, till at length they denounce all other churches as Babylon, and their pastors as hirelings and deceivers. They say these pastors cannot defend their doctrines; dare not try. They offer rewards to any who will prove so and so; boast how they have scared this one, defeated that one, and silenced another. If in sermons the least reference is made to them, they call it persecution, give out a review, and do everything to provoke controversy. When the resident pastors are compelled to defend themselves, the Adventists claim to be greatly abused. From "Seventh-day Adventism Renounced" by D.M. Canright, 1914 I guess what got me to thinking of this was a previous discussion on the practices of SDA outreach such as have been discussed lately. To me it looks as if it is the same as it was in Canright’s day. That is why they gave attention to T.D. Jakes sermon on rest in Christ. As the saying goes “The more things change the more they remain the same” I been in this several years and I am still dumfounded to the point where I cannot take it all in at once. River | ||

River, I believe you have made an excellent assessment. Adventist evangelism still operates on much this same "system". Even though the more "progressive" Adventists won't talk much about persecution, still the subtext of Adventism (and historic and "true-blue" Adventists still have this subtext running just below the surface at all times) is that they will be persecuted, and they see most shifts and movements within Christianity as presaging persecution. Last year a friend and I had a series of "studies" with two Jehovah's Witnesses. It lasted for 9 weeks and we spent the entire time on the identity of Jesus. It was an interesting but frustrating time. I mention this because I am struck by how similar JW'w are to SDA's in their psychology. Both attack the beliefs of orthodox Christians and both scream persecution when their positions are too closely scrutinized. Dane |
