To God? or to the SDA heirarchy? I imagine the latter would be more than happy to accept your sin offering, thank offering, birthday offering, parking offering, privilege to have that "good ol' SDA feeling" offering, illness offering (you know, sister white tells us that to be sick is a sin). It sounds to me like a bit of a scam, but what do I know? I mustn't question the Testimonies... | ||

I'm laughing...you know, if all this weren't so personal and familiar, I'd be merely rolling my eyes. Goodness, why didn't we see that even her language—"sin offerings", "thank offerings", etc, was straight out of the Old Covenant? But then, who knew what the Old Covenant really was? After all, I learned that all God's promises were conditional upon obedience. It was a completely new idea for me to see that God's unilateral promises were 100% unconditional, regardless of human behaviors. Timing is His...discipline is His...and His promises are also His...and totally reliable. The really sad thing is that the reality none of us truly saw was Jesus and His complete atonement. Of course there can't be satisfying answers to people's theological conundrums when there's no consistent core of Jesus and His subsitutionary death in their theology! Can you guys stand one more money quote? egw was rather fanatic at times, depending on which issue was currently on her mind. This example really illustrates and shows how her own words betray her. egw was addressing herself to tithes and offerings under the heading, "The Only Way to Manifest Gratitude."

Sure it is, Diana. Other churches teach tithe, but not to the extent SDA's do. It's essentially part and parcel of your salvation and you had better do it if you want to be saved. Backed up by Ellen. Wonder if the Clear Word has something to say on that? I need to get my books unpacked! I dated a Methodist minister for a couple of years and he always said the other churches were envious of the amount of money the SDA church tithed. The other pastors wished they had that level of support in their churches. I explained to him some things about Adventism. Our relationship ended, but he never really changed his mind about Adventism being anything but another Christian denomination. *sigh* Susan | ||

Colleen, You have no idea of the import of your words. God kept me safer than I ever dreamed in that relationship ending. What I thought was the worst thing that could happen was actually the best thing. God DOES work all things for good! Susan |
