I just found Biblos.com this morning as I was looking up a verse in Colossians, and was really impressed to be able to see so many different translations (and languages) on one page in an easily readable fashion. I thought I'd share it here since we all are at varying stages of study and thought to do with Christianity and it never hurts to have some extra tools around for investigating it's primary source material! I also have a few tidbits from current reading that I thought might be good for some thought or a smile, or whatever (emphasis formating is my own):
quote:Sincerity We are not bound to say all we think but we are bound not even to look what we do not think. Charity and Orthodoxy Every man who tries to obey the Master is my brother, whether he counts me such or not, and i revere him; but dare I give quarter to what I see to be a lie because my brother believes it? The lie is not of God, whoever may hold it. Impossibilities "I thank, thee, Lord, for forgiving me, but I prefer staying in the darkness: forgive me that too." -- "No, that cannot be. The one thing that cannot be forgiven is the sin of choosing to be evil, of refusing deliverance. It is impossible to forgive that. It would be to take part in it." Answer "But how can God bring this about in me?" -- Let him do it and perhaps you will know. Shame We may trust God with our past as heartily as with our future. It will not hurt us so long as we do not try to hide things, so long as we are ready to bow our heads in hearty shame where it is fit we should be ashamed. For to be ashamed is a holy and blessed thing. Shame is a thing to shame only those who want to appear, not those who want to be. Shame is to shame those who want to pass their examination, not those who would get into the heart of things. . . . To be humbly ashamed is to be plunged in the cleansing bath of truth. Justice and Revenge While a satisfied justice is an unavoidable eternal event, a satisfied revenge is an eternal impossibility. --George MacDonald (quoted in George MacDonald, An Anthology 365 Readings, edited and prefaced by CS Lewis)
quote:"Truth, however disenchanting, is better than falsehood, however comforting." -- Albert Schweitzer

Mary, great quotes! Thank you so much! I "discovered" MacDonald about seven years ago...I had previously had no idea that he had influenced C.S. Lewis. (But what did I actually know about most Christian authors and thinkers in my "past"?!) Colleen |

ha! Colleen, that makes me think of the fact that I didn't know there were ANY great writers other than Ellen Imagine my surprise when I discovered Spurgeon, Calvin, Luther. And now back to the subject. Mary...I must say you stretch my mind. That's good, I think. I'll let you know when I figure out what the quotes mean. Patria |

I keep expanding my list of great authors. Three that I've recently found are: Alexander Maclaren who wrote a 17 volume exposition of the Bible, along with many individual books. George G. Findlay, a great expositor who was well known in the late 1800's. A.W. Pink, you can find many of his writings online at the ccel.org site. Have any of you read Alfred Edersheims book on the Jewish temple at the time of Christ? It's online at www.ccel.org That temple was one of the wonders of the world and after reading this book you'll know why! |

I, too, have recently discovered a good author...Andrew Murray. He was evidently a contemporary of Ellen White. I also recently discovered a wonderful website...www.librivox.org. You can listen to many audio books, the recordings of which are all done by volunteers. It's FREE to download them. Here's a link to "Absolute Surrender and Other Addresses," by Andrew Murray. http://librivox.org/absolute-surrender-by-andrew-murray/ It's read by a woman named Joy Chan, who has a delightful British accent. Awesome HonestWitness! I've read one of Andrew Murray's books, but am glad to see the link to more of his material. His writings are very challenging to my thought processes . . . in a good way. Blessings, Mary |
