I believe Bridge City of Milwaukie, Oregon with pastor Marc Schelske fits the profile of a former. They are Sabbatarian. Bridge City

I may have misspoken about Bridge City. I know they worship on Saturday, but I am not sure they are Sabbatarian in a strict sense of the word.

They use to have their messages in a format that you could download. Now you have to pay for them. One in particular is titled "Why I Remember the Sabbath Day" by Marc Schelske. If I remember right it was not salvational in its approach to the Sabbath.

Someone might have a better understanding about Bridge City than me. I have attended a few times when I visit Oregon. My late sister and her family attended and continue to attend there.

Alan

And by the way -- post 100! Woho!

Gilbert,
You may want to check with Good News Unlimited as they may have other former SDA pastor contacts. They used to sometimes schedule meetings at churches which were pastored by former SDA pastors. They may have contacts in the U.S., Canada and Australia. I am also not sure if Roy Gee and Roy Allen are formers.
Isn't the pastor of Riverside SDB church a former SDA also?

Thank you for all the leads. It is interesting that there are not more former SDA pastors involved in pastoring in Christian churches. It is obvious from all the collateral references in denominational, and other, literature that there are plenty of SDA pastors that have left, or have been relieved of their jobs.

Considering that most of what we were taught was corrupt "gospel", I can imagine how how difficult it would be as a theologian to replace my entire belief system! Transformations such as Pastor Mark's and Pastor Clay Peck's are truly nothing less than a miracle of God. It truly demonstrates the power of the Holy Spirit.

It is my hope to provide encouragement to those SDA pastors who lurk here seeking truth. They are in a very difficult spot financially. By following in the footsteps of other former SDA pastors, they will be able to follow their convictions and the leading of the Holy Spirit. They especially need other successful former SDA pastors that they can "mentor" under.

Perhaps Pastor Mark would know which avenues for future employment offer the most promise to SDA pastors who wish to transition out of Adventism.

Hi Blessed

Last I heard there was one pastoring a church in Calgary.

I'm not sure how he would feel about having his name out here but he has posted on this forum. It has been a couple of years since I've seen any thing from him on here though.

Cloudy, actually it's the Maranatha Community church in Colton that is the SDB church with a fomer SDA as lead pastor. George used to be the youth minister for the Riverside church but has now started a new SDB church in Colton. The url is www.coltonchurch.com

Thanks Jdpascal. I think I will post on the members only section and see if he responds. Also Pastor Mark and Dale do you know of any former pastors who are currently pastoring churches in Canada?

I covered the story of the formation of Bridge City in Portland for Adventist Today in the 90s, before Marc Shelske was the pastor. At the time, they were definitely not considered Adventist, but the situation as I perceived it was different from that of Clay Peck and Richard Fredericks. AToday did stories about their firings as well. (In fact, there was a spate of SDA pastor firings in the late 90's.)

Of all the stories I covered, the two whose firings seemed to be totally over issues related to the pure gospel were Richard Fredericks and Clay Peck. Some of the others were taking issue with the IJ and having trouble with their conferences, and still others had serious issues with conference control and financial protocol. Bridge City's issues at that time was hugely related to conference "touble" and control.

I remember even then being aware that not all "former Adventist churches" were of the same stripe. Many of them remained Sabbatarian, even if they learned not to preach it "salvationally". My sense was that, at that time, at least some of those "former" churches were formed more out of congregational independence than over embracing Jesus alone.

From where I sit, it seems like most "former" Adventist Pastors that leave Adventism are so burned out and frustrated by the process that they end up in a totally different profession or job. A lot of the time, they are so hurt that they often leave organized religion altogether.

In my community I can think of 7 fellows who used to be pastors, and still remain Adventist, but left the ministry simply because of the stress and strain of lack of support from the conference, having to move often, and having try and meet unattainable expectations. Those that leave because of theological differences are often so dissolutioned that they even leave Christianity.

From those I have spoken to, there is very little support for the questioning Pastor, or the Pastor that challenges the status quo.

Randy, I think you are right. I personally know of pastors who have become chaplains. Perhaps that has something to do with it.

It seems to me there is a great ministry in all the Christian denoms for Adventist Pastors who have left for the reasons of finding the Adventist church a false church and not suffering from burnout.

The reason being I think this is that people coming out of Adventism are strong on the covenants where many of the Christian churches are weak on that subject, not saying the Pastors are but the people.
If there is a willing heart God will furnish a ministry.
