I recieved a envelope in the mail last week with the return address of:

The Universal Publishing Assn.
Bashan Hill
Exeter, Missouri

In this envelope contained two "tracts". One titled "A Burdened Letter To All Nathaniels And Nicodemuses - The True Members of God's Remnant Church" and the other titled "TIME - How Important!"

It was addressed to myself and my wife.
On the outside of the envelope there is no indication to who exactly it is from (aside from the information I posted above)

As I opened the first tract on the inside of the cover page it quotes John 1:46,47 & John 3:4,5.

On the next page it reads:

Dear Brethren:

We appeal to your sense of fairness to your own souls to give a fair, unbiased hearing to the following inspired instruction:

Then goes on to quote Testimonies to Ministers, p. 107:2

(To not be exhaustive I won't quote the passages)

After another short sentance from the authors of the tract, they heavily quote EGW until the end of the tract which is 13 pages long. On the last page they have a "Scriptural Index". They list only 9 verses within 5 books of the Bible. They also have a "Spirit of Prophecy Index" that lists 41 quotes within 19 different EGW sources.

I first thought it was something from the SDA church trying to "appeal" to me to come back to the church. Being that they had my name and address I figured that that was what it was. But as I read through, I realized it was letting SDAs know that the leadership of the SDA church isn't staying in line with what EGW had originally said. And appealing to it's members to how Adventists are supposed to be.

As I got the the last page, the second to the last paragraph reads like this:

"Whoever among you may read this true statement concerning The Shepherd's Rod message and Davidian Seventh-day Adventists, and who are Nathaniels and Nicodemuses determined to know the Truth for yourselves and therefore are concerned to have an opportunity to hear the Truth presented, may do so by sending a written request to:"...

And their address is listed.

The other tract... haven't and probably won't read it.

I know very little about the Shepherd's Rod and Davidians SDA. I know they're more strict than SDA. In fact, I remember being told to stay away from and avoid literature from the Shepherd's Rods while I was Adventist by other SDAs.

Has anyone else recieved anything from these groups? How did they get my name and address? This may be my prompt to remove my name from the SDA church role, huh? It seems all Adventist groups use the same tactics. No wonder they can't get along with each other much less other Christians.

Has anyone else experiened this type of thing from this group? Just curious.

A couple of years ago someone put CDs on the windshields of cars at the SDA church I was attending. It was a message about the 144,000 and the "sealing" and how God was going to destroy even those Adventists who do not cry over others' sins. I listened to it out of curiosity it was truly horrid. Sounded like Shepherd's Rod/Branch Davidian nonsense but I'm not sure.

We received the same mailing at our home - I believe it was addressed to my wife (she is an SDA member, I am not). I assumed they got her name not from the SDA church, but perhaps from the mailing list of an associated organization from which she receives mailings (such as ADRA).

Blessings,

Wally

Reb...they are using an EGW quote. She basically said in one of her quotes that WE who don't cry and lament over others sins will be lost. I think the quote was posted recently on CARM. ICK!

We got those mailings years ago, but haven't received any lately. No idea how they got our address then (we've moved).

"Shepherd's Rod" and the Davidians are an offshoot of Adventism - they have taken Adventism, then piled on several more 'messengers' on top of the one Adventism already had.

Here are some links to further information (it's interesting to note that the Wikipedia entries are disputed):
On Shepherd's Rod
On Victor Houteff
On Benjamin Roden

Branch Davidians (of Waco Standoff fame) are a branch of the Davidian Seventh Day Adventist Movement

ew, shepard's rod. Let me tell you something. A couple of people that I knew who were adventist slowly started joining the shepard's rod and one thing I noticed is that they dress alike and they infiltrate the SDA churches and whenever there would be a sabbath school class, they would always open ellen g. white's books and refute what the teacher was teaching. Like the teacher could be reading from the bible and then they come out with their spirit of prophecy as if it were the final word. I heard they believe that they're the ones sent to whip the SDA church into shape, hence the name "The shepard's rod". I remember they came over my moms house and gave a presentation of their teachings and my mom was not happy with it. I know they use the same tactics as SDA's by pulling people in by handing ellen g. white health books and stuff. Well anyways, all I know that in the spanish greater new york conference, they were banned from all sda churches. LOL.

Sounds like some of the ones I ran into in Tennessee and Ontario. One thing the ones I met were big into was 'living the Ezekiel message' - which meant they were to be the angel who came through and cleansed the church. Some of these claimed to mean this 'only spiritually' others made no bones about the 'fact' that their job was to bring literal 'slaughtering weapons' and purge all the SDA churches of their 'filth'; of course they assured us that that would be only after God told them it was time, but that was small comfort.

You know Mary, it is strange how something such as that can creep into an organization.

I think I have witnessed it even in Christian evangelical based organizations.

It seems to be a spirit of hardness, anger, un-forgiveness, unmerciful, grating; I use these words to describe how the overall spirit seems to come across to me personally.

In the case of the evangelical thing I “Think” I have witnessed I really don’t know what to make of it, all I know is I want no part of it.

They claim to use the words God said to them but to me it doesn’t resemble the Holy Spirit I have known all these years.

Very strange indeed.

The important thing is to be grounded in the word of God. Read the Bible and not those other things. The devil is out to decieve, but we don't have to be afaid of him. Please, everyone, read, read, read the Bible!

Helovesme2, I think I've heard of that message myself from them as well, but didn't know the name of it. When I was talking about them coming over to talk to my mom that's what they were talking to her about, the 'living the Ezekiel message'.
