Tomorrow my son starts his first ever non-sda school. (Even though I left adventism over a year ago, I left him in sda school his 8th grade year, after much prayer)

I never dreamed my child would not attend Academy. Oddly, while I am excited, I am also grieving this. It seems like really closing the door to some of the tradition, gym nights, etc. I complained about Academy, but ultimately it was mostly a good experience for me. I am still lifelong friends with a couple Academy friends, and for that I thank God.

After tons of prayer, the decision was made to put my son in public high school. I took him Friday for orientation. God really confirmed this decision for me. My son ended up going to a school outside of my zone, and my prayer partner is a teacher at that school. We met one of his teachers Friday, and she is a committed Christian prayer warrior! God arranged it so we were alone with her in the classroom, and the subject came up "inadvertently". She would not have been able to discuss the depth of her heart toward God if others had been present.

She prays over her roster each day! She meets discreetly with other teachers each morning for prayer!

My son told her that he considered this school a mission field, and that he wanted to bring kids to God! I am still brought to tears by that statement. God has done so much in this child's heart.

Many of you have prayed so faithfully for him. I am deeply grateful to all you who prayed this last 1 1/2 years. He has come through a completly unexpected divorce, loss of his grandpa, and loss of most of his SDA friends and social circle in less that a year. God is faithful, your prayers are heard and honored, and my child is growing in grace quickly. His name is still on the SDA books, and he attends SDA church sometimes, but mostly he comes more and more with me to church, and is becomming active there. I think it wont be long till he decides to remove his name. At 14, I believe that is his decision to make under the influence of the Holy Spirit.

Thank you! Thank you!, to you Christian teachers, especially those in the public schools. I am so grateful to you. You are truly missionaries! The stories my teacher friends tell me are amazing! I know Seeker is a teacher, and Colleen used to be, (and still teaches us!). Thanks to you two, and to the others I don't know of.

Hugs,
Lori

Lori, God is in this. Praise Him for His faithfulness! I have a friend who, with her husband, decided to put their kids into public school two years ago. For her, this move was the real crisis of her leaving Adventism.

It has been a wonderful experience for all of them. God is faithful.

Lori,
I know God arranged for me to take my son out of SDA schools when he was in 4th grade. All my friends at church told me, Oh Diana, remember what EGW said..blah, blah, blah...Two years later all of them had taken their children out and told me, "We should have done it when you did."
His public school experience was good. At the time I was nominal SDA. Looking back, I see God's hand in all of it.
God is so good in how he has provided for your son, with Christian teachers. I like your son's attitude also. I will remember you and him in my prayers.
God is awesome.

My son is going to public school this fall after being in Adventist school through the 8th grade. He did not get into Catholic School and was so adamant about not going to Adventist school that my wife relented and let him go to public school.

She isn't happy about it and pretty much blames me for "turning our son against Adventism" but what she doesn't realise is the baloney that Adventist school taught him in "EGW indoctrination class"(which is what I call their Bible class) turned him against Adventism. He told her about how they told them how they would be tortured, in graphic detail, when the Sunday Laws come and how everything is about EGW rather than the Bible and that's what turned him off Adventism, not anything I said or did.

I pray that things go well for him this year in public school and he brings his grades up and keeps his nose clean so he can get in to Catholic school next year.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Lori, I praise God for leading you and your son!
I also have a son entering 9th grade this month. He will be attending a nondenominational Christian academy, but has been homeschooled K-8 so this will be new for him also. So there will be several of us praying for our students and entrusting them to God's hands!

I have a daughter entering 9th grade this Wednesday. She has been in public school all of her life. We have had no problems - ever. Very good school system. I know high school is another story so I know she needs prayer also.

Our oldest daughter is also entering 9th grade this year. We switched from SDA to public school four years ago and so far continue to be very happy with it. Most all of her school friends are active in their churches and some have invited her to their church events. The same for our younger daughter. I've noticed that several of the parents at our church are very active in chaperoning the school events and/or volunteering lots of time at the schools. I think that adds to a Christian influence there. One in particular is well-known by the students and considered a great role model.

I would say public schools are generally reflective of the community they are in. There are so many obviously Christian parents in our community who send their kids to public school (and/or teach there) - it would have to affect it positively.

It will be easy to remember to pray for all these rising 9th graders! Really, I will pray for all the children represented here, grown ones too! Diana, I pray for your military son. I really want to give back in prayer what you all have given me in praying for my son.

Cloudy, my son has one friend he knows from my church at his school--he was a homeschooler all his life. They ate lunch together. (My son thought school lunch was the greatest-No nuteena loaf or haystacks) Both survived the first day, in a school with over 800 freshman! I was more nervous than they were...

Thanks for the encouraging stories of transition!

Lori,
Thank you for remembering all the children represented her and for my son in the military. That means a whole lot to me.
I will remember all the transitioning 9th graders also.

Lori, Praying for your son in his new mission field! Praying for all the new 9th graders and all of the children represented here!

My daughter, who was homeschooled from grades 1-8 will also be entering 9th grade at a wonderful non-denominational Christian school next week. We are very excited! One of her best friends who was also homeschooled will be going to public school. I can remember before my daughter was even in kindergarten (while we were still SDA) planning her education scenario - Adventist elementary school > Adventist Academy > Adventist College (Southern). This would have involved us having to move closer to the sda school. But, the Lord had bigger and better plans for us. Thank you Jesus!

My children are in public school..8th & 10th. Dakota attended church school in 1st grade and part of 2nd. Then we moved to area that didn't have a local church school. We would have had to drive 40 miles to the nearest church school so we decided on public school. My husband's family was scandalized.

My SIL & BIL homeschooled their daughter until last year when they finally enrolled her in church school. My BIL was the one doing the teaching, and he only has an 8th grade education so when Sara finally got finished with the 6th grade they decided it was time for her to go to school.

Funny thing is...my husband's family was scandalized because my children were in public school yet they didn't see a thing wrong with someone with only an 8th grade education teaching a child.

Adventists don't see anything wrong with a brain-damaged mentally ill woman with only a 3rd grade education who had been dead 92 years telling them how to think.

Back in the 80's we were living in Las Vegas and the public school was infested with gangs and dope.

My daughter came to me one day and said "Dad I want to go back to the Pacific Northwest to finish my last year in my old school, I said "Sis we don't have the money to send you and keep you up there, and I can't let go my job to take you." She said "Thats o.k. I will take care of myself" so I gave her permission. That girl fed herself and kept a decent apartment and finished school all on her own. She was saved at thirteen.
She got married and is now going to college all on her own.

I am so thankful for my daughter and what God has done in her life, we did pay for her daughters adoption, she is unable to have children and the adoption was around 16000.00, other than that she has been self sufficient since she was 16.

She has brought the adopted daughter up in the admonition of the Lord.

Just a Dad crowing a little, I get tickled at my wife, every stranger she meets she whips out her pictures.
And yes I confess to spoiling my granddaughter.

River, I don't blame you for crowing a little; she sounds like a Godly woman.

River, what a wonderful story. That little granddaughter is a blessed girl! I think every child should have a grandma who shows off his/her pictures and a grandpa who spoils him/her!
