My husband{still adventist]and are flying out to Montana this week, so my Adventist in-laws are flying down from Maine to watch the girls for us, anyway, whenever they come they pick, pick, pick!I eat meat, even pork, my husband does not so I cook food and buy groceries to accomodate us both. Well, my mother in-law comes back from the grocery store with so much food, nasty food, for them, I don't have any room, for groceries I need to buy for the girls. My mother in-laws says well, they can eat some of our food,I say well that's fine.I give her a list of foods they will not eat, she's appalled my girl's won't eat tofu, beets, prunes, loma linda hotdogs, humus, she say's well their gonna have to learn to like it! I told her no, your not going to make them eat food that will make them sick! So to go on, the girls and I go to the mall,my husband calls me on my cell,my mom's making tofu lasagna! When you coming home, I tell him the girls and I are going out for pizza. We got home and she was upset,I told my husband I should be the one upset, she knew we didn't eat tofu!My husband is a captain in the Air Force, he has medical wilderness and competency training and tactics. So my father in-law finds out that on Saturday,he'll be in the woods practicing medical emergencies all day,yes that is working on the Sabbath my father in-law says, you can tell he's upset! My husband told him to backoff and mind his own business, not only that,he also told him he no longer believes in EGW as a prophet! And the girl's and I will not be harrassed to eat their food, my huband hates tofu,he was sick a lot as a child because of the nasty food he was forced to eat, like eating dandelions, tufo, hummus! UK!I was proud my husband for finally stood for himself and his family!

My MIL makes some of the nastiest food in the world. Honestly, my boys won't eat anything at their house, and Dakota is a 15 year old eating machine. She puts tofu in everything even pancakes. Those had to be the heaviest pancakes I'd ever eaten. I will admit that they stuck with me a lot longer than regular pancakes but still...

She goes through phases of being strict vegan to vegetarianism. She makes her own ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise. All their cheese is either tofu cheese or soy cheese. She drinks several glasses of hot water before breakfast to wake up her stomach. We try not to eat too many meals over there. The surprising thing is...they're all overweight. They're not any healthy than we carnivores....

Cortney,

I am speechless!

I am so proud that your husband is putting his foot down. It's unfortunate that you can't take the girls with you.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us.

Lucy,

I can't even imagine drinking hot water before breakfast! I can tell this is going to be an entertaining thread.

My other MIL (yeah, lucky me I have 2) gave up meat when she was diagnosed with breast cancer because someone at her church said the cancer was a result of eating meat. Oddly enough she was diagnosed with cancer in the other breast almost a year to the day she had her first surgery. I guess eating meat wasn't the cause of her cancer after all.

My parents weren't really vegatarians (since SDAs allow "clean" meats), but they were, almost. We had meat only a few times a year at the most. I didn't have any close relatives that were that strict either. But I know that really conservative Adventists are that way.

Cortney, We have had similar experiences with our relatives. When they were invited to our son's wedding we catered vegetarian for their convenience, however wasn't good enough and they went out and brought back pure vegan with a heavy emphasis on tofu. This was not only offensive but distainfull of the expence we incurred just for them. They have now graduated from traditional Loma Linda Soy foods to a further extreme.

It is interesting to speculate that the damage may already be done as the recent research coming in on soy does not look good. Though there is much controversy about the effects of soy including links to homosexuality and hormonal difficulties as well as some diseases, but the issue has not been conclusively settled

One report I read some time back was a research project that fed genetically altered soy to rats and virtually all rats died. Not good, as much of the soy in the food supply is now genetically altered.

I can say that in my immediate family there are 2 openly gay, another died of breast cancer age 47, and others with diseases indicated in the research. All raised on heavy LL foods. While at this time it is unreasonable to directly link soy food to these problems, as for me and my family we eat soy very sparingly (though I do miss Vegalona)

This is a pretty funny subject! I grew up in the strictest of the strict vegan all-natural SDA homes. But without many soy products. And I liked it! It was so funny... when I went to Hartland College I liked the cafeteria food there because it was tastier than what I was used to! A good percentage of the other students there could barely stand the caf food.

Now, I still eat a lot like I grew up eating. Right now I cook my own food, and that's what I know. I have expanded to include some animal products. But when I'm at social gatherings I just get real adventurous and try whatever I want. So far, I haven't found anything that tasted other than like food, and some things are pretty great tasting!

Here's a good Hartland College story for you all... it wasn't me! http://www.collegestories.com/storyview.aspx?sid=310

Cortney,

I do sympathize and hurt for your kids and all the confusion that goes with it, I am praying for your family.

Now to something else, the post you guys put on here about food really cracks me up.
Dandylions? I wish I could get up a load of Adventist to come up here and graze the Dandylions off my place, humus? Soybeans, boy they’ll graze on just about anything!
Now if any you eat paper that’s probably a good thing, it saves you from having to buy a shredder.

Now I would have a blast if I had Adventist in-laws, I give my Adventist friends fits so that they won’t ever mention when they are sick at their stomach, they know I will start talking about road kill or possum.

I didn’t get a Adventist in-laws but I got Adventist friends to play with, so there!!!
It does save on groceries to have Adventist friends, they are afraid to show up at meal time.

Cortney, wow! I'm so proud of your husband!

The food issue is an ongoing saga in our extended family. Now that Richard eats meat—a very difficult transition for someone taught from an early age that meat was no more food than were feces—and enjoys it, his parents, who are vegans, just plain have trouble eating at our house. When they come for Thanksgiving or Christmas, they definitely bring their own food. I have not asked them to do this, but they—especially my MIL—wouldn't even eat our vegetarian food over the past few years since we left the church.

Now that she's diagnosed with celiac's disease, however, she really can't eat anything that even touches gluten. So her diet is even more restricted than before. With celiac's disease, she could eat eggs, meat, fish, etc. But because she's vegan, she not only can't eat any meat or dairy, but she can't eat gluten, either.

I believe the reason they/she stopped eating the vegetarian food we served at the holidays, however, was the fear that they had been cooked in the oven with the meat—or worse, that some of the juices or sauces might find their way into the vegetarian gravy or food... Early on Richard told me they were upset at the idea that the molecules from the baking turkey were mingling with the molecules of the baking mock turkey.

So, when they offer to bring something and ask what I want them to bring, I just say, "Bring whatever you want to eat." It works.

I will never forget when my mother (life time SDA) came to visit unexpectedly at dinner time. My wife had bought a pork roast ( thinking it was beef) and we prepared it as not to waste. At the time we had not been out of the SDA church very long and had minor reservations about pork. When my mother arrived she could smell it cooking and decided to join us for dinner.

We didn't tell her it was pork and she assumed it was beef. She raved about it s wonderful flavor and went back for seconds. We told her the truth about 3 years later.

A brother of mine worked at the conference office in Miami. They would often take friends to local Cuban restaurants to order one of the local favorites " dry beef" , a Cuban delicacy.. Only later to learn that it is another term for horse meat.

It is sad when food becomes a dividing point between people. One person's nasty is another's yum, and no one likes their yum being called nasty or being forced to eat what they consider nasty. I love hummus (they have some great flavored ones at Trader Joe's) and tofu and beets and even prunes, sometimes. The Loma Linda hotdogs/ vegelinks not so much. I know that no meat is unclean, but I don't feel the need to eat every living thing that moves to prove I can.

It's great that your husband is starting to set boundaries with his parents. I pray that you will be able to continue to set them for yourselves and for your children with as little rancor as possible.

Hi Cloudy,

I'm like you. We get different flavors of hummus for sandwich spread when we are traveling. We also use tofu occasionally. Many of the good sandwhich fillings come from legumes, etc. I guess I like potatoes, sweet corn, big juicy tomatoes, cantelope, etc, best. We also have a big orchard that we go out and pick ripe fruit from. I will admit that I do eat too much (fattening) cheese. <grin>

I've just never really cared for vega-meat. Most of it has MSG and all kinds of other hard-to-digest stuff. Besides, isn't it dietary adultery to pretend in our heart that we are eating real meat, and then eat Wham, fake Turkey, Tuna, etc?

To me the stuff that is really disgusting is produced by the Little Debbie Health Food, er Sugar, Factory.

Hi Gilbert,

Yes, I agree that those vegemeats are unhealthy.
I used to use them for convenience especially when I was the lone vegetarian in my family. I was raised on the SAD(standard american diet) sans the unclean meats and alcohol. My non-SDA father used to tease me about the SDA's selling things like Wham. He'd ask me how they would know what ham tasted like in order to make something that mimicked it.

Unfortunately much of my family on the SAD diet have health problems related to diet/ lifestyle. It was pretty clear to me that cutting out unclean foods did not improve one's health. I never cared for meat, so was gratified to find that my choice to be a vegetarian would be acceptable to SDA relatives if it was on religious grounds even if they still made fun of me (my first red book was Counsels on Diet and Health). I really enjoyed the food at the AU cafeteria, and once I went there, I stayed a vegetarian for many years (I also enjoyed the fattening cheese until I had a gall bladder attack a few years ago; now I mostly steer clear).

Gilbert, I love the term you used, "dietary adultry". I'm going to use that the next time my mother-in-law puts chicken-like out on the table! My conscience just will NOT allow me to eat that abomination!

funny I was watching 3ABN,ask the pastor show, its amuzing to me now to watch it. and they were spouting thier "health msg" and how it relates to obedience etc. they said that vegetarians have a better tempermant not as esaily angered, where as ppl who eat meat thier moods can go over the place easily angered and become "ferosious" (sp?) hmmmm I thought I never hit my kids when they sneaked a snack but I know of a vegan family that did. and nonsense about putting caffeine into our bodys because ppl have shaking fits when this is taken away from them like an alcoholic,ok coffee can be hard to give up I personaly get headaches, but it's not impossible and I have yet to see drinking coffee break up a marriage,or alter a persons personality, cause them to loose thier jobs etc.

I grew up mostly vegetarian and had the most horrible temper. I blew up over the smallest thing. God took away that temper and now that I am essentially a meat eater, the temper stays gone. Gee, I wonder !!!!!!
I know now why I had the temper. I had nothing to do with eating meat or being vegetarian.

I think it would be kind of interesting to see Doug Batchelor present, as an Amazing Fact, the location of the "animal organs" in his brain. Perhaps he could talk about "vital force", and work in a little demonstration of phrenology while he is at it.

I can see it now! A Bible in one hand, while his other hand points to bumps on his head! He could teach how to do a self-examination.

He would have to give his "Solemn Appeal" presentation real late at night.

Courtney,

My mom used to be like that, but not quite so bad. Maybe when those "delectibles" are served up next time, you could run to the front door, stand outside and knock and say "hello, Lord Jesus, are you in there? I can't seem to see You." I don't know, maybe it's the tofu smoke.

MIL is on the verge of diabetes and my husband has high cholesteral. There both vegetarian, I don't see the health benefits for them. I'm a carnivore and chocaholic,my last physical I was in perfect health. Oh yeah, alot of my husband's side of the family have health problems, all vegetarians. My 76 year old grandfather who eats meat, and pork, dairy, had a hip replacement and the doctor told him he had the healthiest body he'd ever seen for 76 year old.I guess I'm just still confused with SDA health reform idea.

Cortney, you and I are in the same boat! My FIL and SIL are vegetarians who are both morbidly obese. My BIL is morbidly obese as well (tho not vegetarian) and what's worse is that he is an SDA pastor. His liver is so bad from the obesity that he can't take medications for the minor skin and nail ailments he suffers from. These people are NOT healthy! They never exercise, suffer from diabetes and high BP and their diets consist of a lot of fried fake meat as well as bakery goods.

This Lutheran girl eats pretty much anything and I'm the healthiest person in the whole family. I hear ya, sister.

Colleen, I'm just so glad that Nuteena is no longer available! Haha.
