"While my fellow believers are constantly seeking to advance themselves in godliness, they show little direct interest in God himself....There is something narcissistic and, to tell the truth, nutty in being more concerned about godliness than about God."

I was the same way when I was an Adventist. I was trying so hard to keep the rules - while avoiding reading much of Ellen White. (Her rules were so HEAVY and HARD that I figured the less I knew them, the better.) At the same time, I believed in being saved-by-grace-through-faith, but didn't have the assurance of salvation. I'd have that assurance only for a little while right after I prayed and asked Jesus to forgive my sins and gave myself to Him all over again; but that feeling of having salvation didn't last long and I'd have to pray again. I was mostly just interested in "making it to Heaven." I knew God was there, somewhere nearby, but He was kind of distant and obscured. Now, it's much easier to love God and He's closer and a lot more real! Dianne |
