Back in December of 2000, the Adventists in Burundi tried to block the missionary work of Seventh Day Baptists in that country. Apparantly they bribed local officials in that country so they would deny organisation status to the SDB church there. This was in the Feb, 2001 issue of the Sabbath Recorder and this was cited under the news category on Bro. Dirk Anderson's EGW website. Could it be the Adventists are AFRAID of the Seventh Day Baptists, because the Seventh Day Baptists have a Gospel message the Adventists don't? | ||

Reb, without knowing the details, I suspect the Adventists feel the SDBs would be a threat because the Sabbath would look the same and the locals wouldn't be able to tell the difference. (Indeed, how would a local African who had no theological training or background initially tell the difference between two apparently Christian Sabbath-keeping churches?) Ellen is not the initial focal point in evangelism in third-world countries. In fact, one of the General Conference's current goals is to translate 10 EGW books (including the Conflict of the Ages series) into the local languages where the church is growing the fastest. They have said that unless they can get EGW into the locals' hands, they will not be able to grow into true Adventist Christians. They will look more like "regular" Christians. They need the EGW "distinctives" in order to be truly Adventist. Bottom line...it's a numbers game which translates into power and $$$$. Make no mistake—Adventism is big business behind the scenes. Not true of all third world countries, Colleen. Ellen is a BIG focus in Indonesia, where my wife was born and raised. Indonesian SDAs are BIG TIME EGW Thumpers. 13 years ago, when my Parents-in-Law were visiting us from Indoensia, we took them to Elmshaven because my Father-in-Law wanted to see EGW's "angel room" which he said he had dreamed about since he was a boy. I agree it is a numbers game that translattes into power and $$$$$ and Adventism IS BIG BUSINESS I don't doubt that for one minute. |
