I've seen it, Rejoyce! All I can remember is "womb manipulation". Ewwww!
It was funny, and I really got a kick out of Anthony Hopkins as Kellogg, and Dana Carvey as his "special" brother. I thought I was going to be sick when they were trying to make a better corn flake recipe!
You know, I might have to ask my husband about the eggs and heaven business. I don't know if he'd even remember, but I'm curious to know how his family gets around that. The man who sold the bakery to my FIL was SDA as well, and they've never been open on Sabbath in the 60 or so years in business.
I wish I knew where that crazy woman came up with all those notions, especially when there's proof she ate meat, lemon pie, and oysters. How eggs would hinder you from your place in Heaven, I'll never know.

I have the information at home for where to order the movie. I will post the info. by tomorrow. I believe you will enjoy it. Also, Grace, I can post where I read about the eggs. I can find it for sure because I have a "well worn" Index to Ellen G. White writings that guided my life for too many years. Maybe you all can relate. Your family probably gets around this statement the way all good Adventists do. They ignore it. SDAs pick and choose what they apply to their lives from EGW writings. If a person did not do that they would be labled a fanatic by Aventists and others. |

FYI...netflix has The Road to Wellville, I just put it on our queue...what a cast it has! Looks funny. For some reason, I thought it was an sda film of sorts but it is a hollywood film/comedy. It was based on some novel written about health fads around the turn of the century. Unfortunately it is rated R, so I guess it won't make popcorn and movie night with the kids! |

No, TamióRoad To Wellville isn't for the kids, but when we watched it, we were just in transition. We laughed a lot, but it was also sort-of horrifying, because we knew that in general, the weirdness was how it wasóand we were somehow "related" to all that.
If it weren't for the distinct Adventist connection we all share, I probably wouldn't recommend the movie. But to look backwards at all the "health reform" and to realize that much of Ellen's inspiration came from the "sanitoriums" and health conditioning centers of the day INCLUDING Kellogg's put an outside-in perspective on all that "sacred past".

Now, exactly how does Kellogg fit into the picture anyhow? My understanding was that he was sda but didn't adhere to certain things and was dismembershipped. Or did he leave on his own? My memory is foggy on this early church history/health reform, so correct me if I'm wrong. And, I was also under the impression that the whole Battle Creek Sanitorium/Kellogg was sda initiated...or am I wrong here...did it exist before and EGW stumbled across it?
AND, why on earth do I get a craving for Corn Flakes whenever I hear or read the name Kellogg?!?!  |

Ha! Well, Tami, Kellogg was a prominent early Adventist, but he wrote a book in which he attempted to explain his understanding of the Holy Spirit. He submitted the manuscript to the Brethren for approval, and they wouldn't print it; Ellen declared it was heresy and that it taught Pantheism (God is in all things).
Kellogg protested that he understood, based on statements by Ellen herself, that the Holy Spirit is a separate person of the Godhead. He argued that he was merely explaining that the Holy Spirit was a "Him", not an "it", so to speak.
The problem was that the Adventist leaders believed that the Holy Spirit was merely the power that emanated from the Father and the Son. The church was strictly anti-Trinitarian, and Kellogg was promoting a trinitarian view. He had some odd-sounding examples in his book, but he was distinctly promoting the Trinity.
The church refused to publish his book, so Kellogg hired the Reveiw and Herald Pub Assoc to print his book as an outside contract. The Press burned, destroying all of Kellogg's press plates. Then Kellogg took the book to a secular press which did publish it. It made its way into the hands of quite a number of Adventists, but the brethren considered it scandalous.
Ellen, who was no more Trinitarian than the rest of the Brethren (even though she apparently copied some things that sounded Trinitarian), declared Kellogg's Trinitarian views to be "the Alpha of apostasy". Kellogg was blacklisted.
There is an amazing video which Richard found just last night, a recently produced piece done by some conservative Adventists who are pushing for the church to return to its anti-trinitarian roots. They give this whole story of Kellogg, and they assert that many people believe that the "omega of apostasy" which Ellen predicted would come into the church at a later time is, in fact, the church's adoption of the Trinity into its doctrinal statement.

It is an amazing look back at the history of Adventism prior to 1930 when the church first adopted a trinitarian article of belief. It focusses primarily on the period during the late 19th and early 29th C when the issue with Kellogg's trinitarianism AKA "pantheism" was a central focus.
Oh, yesóDr. Kellogg's brother, W Kellog, is the Kellogg of Kellogg cereal fame. Dr. Kellogg invented corn flakes and cereals as part of his health contributions, but his brother took over the manufacturing of it. W. Kellogg's California estate is now the grounds of Cal Poly Pomonaóthe the So California campus of the Cal State Polytechnical school.
I'd love to hear reactions from anyone who might watch the video...

I only watched 1/3 of it and could not stomach any more. I just do not like hearing any unbiblical truths any more. That is my reaction. Maybe another day I will be able to.

I saw the movie Steve, would an Arky worth his salt miss that one?
I really enjoyed the movie, especially the back woodsy language that was used; I was raised in a place that was back woodsyer than that.
I have known simple people that would just soon kill you as look at you.
I rode in an iron wheeled wagon 12 miles to town to get corn ground for meal. My granny cooked on a wood cook stove, I would make a mad run through the kitchen, snatch up a biscuit and get whacked for my trouble with a long handled spoon on my way out.
Pass time for me was jumping off the gate post onto a horse at full gallop as my uncle raced by, fighting with manure, squirrel and coon hunting, riding the pigs, the cows, bulls, horses, mules and anything that moved and had four legs. It was two miles to the mail box.
I flew back there and spent a whole month back there last summer and those people are still back woodsy only now they have T.V., 4x4 fours, and four wheelers and cell phones. The old farm is a hunting lodge.
I donít look back on those times with fondness, it was just that way, they will still play music at the drop of a hat, but as sure as the music comes out the jug will too and they become dangerous.
If you want a good look at the back woods, just rent ìsling bladeî, those people havenít changed much, they just got 4x4 fours and AK 47ís to add to the insanity.

P.S. By the way there is a village back there by the name of Ben Hur that did not get electricity until 1969 or was it 79, I,ll have to ask my brother today. My two brothers got the contract to wire the whole community for electric power. Thatís the truth, I know itís hard to believe, when my brother wired a house and put a test battery on the circuit those people just stood there switching the lights on and off.
Iíve known simple men like the character in that move and a person would not want to rattle their cage too much.

I most certainly didn't have a clue about the Holy Spirit leading me individually as SDA. And I've heard many SDA pastors refer to the Holy Spirit as "it".
Over many years of Adventism I was part of many church boards. There was a perfunctory prayer at the beginning of the meeting, but the people made the decisions. Never, ever have I seen a board that disagrees stop and go to prayer for guidance over the issue.
Rather it was more like SDAs make the plans and then pray for God to bless it. The concept of waiting upon God or listening for the Holy Spirit was certainly foreign to any church I was ever involved with.

You just described the church I was a member of. I remember once when (at my second board meeting), an issue was raised that we were really struggling over. I suggested that maby we should stop to pray and ask God for direction. Everyone looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language, then continued the discussion as if I had never spoken.
I was on that board for two years, with eyes and ears wide open. The experience helped me to realize that I really was not where I needed to be. I was a member of the SDA church for only six years.
I thank God for leading/guiding me back out.
He is truly awesome.

We have been gone a little vacation, so just getting back into reading the Forum. I saw mention of "The Road to Wellness". My husband happened upon that movie one night while channel surfing. We recognized what was going on, and popped a tape in the recorder; so we could sit down and watch the whole thing later. Perhaps my slant on things is a little warped having been a nurse for MANY long years; but I found the movie hilarious and at the same time profoundly sad. To think this type of thing went on; and it really did. Early adventism had the Sanitoriums, which I believe was mentioned by Colleen. Hydrotherapy was practiced there (part of it really does have some healthful benefits) and enemas were "in" (a little nurse humor perhaps) at that time, but 'way different than we see nowadays, thank goodness!
To think I was once part of that organization just boggles my mind! And to think that some folks still believe in EGW! Pray for them, as we do daily and more!
