I wasn't sure where to post this comment or if it is acceptable under the ground rules?? It is neither directly related to "former Adventist" or to Theology Issues. I just walked in and heard the comments of President Carter on the TV at the final services before President Ford is buried. President Carter expressed their shared faith in the death and resurection of Jesus Christ in the most personal of words I've heard in any of the services the past few days. I was very touched with tears in my eyes. I have always admired President Carter and how he lives his faith both in private and public. He and President Ford had a strong faith in Christ. I hope that others see my faith in ALL that I do and say. Not see me but HIM ! ! In Him, Richard rtruitt@mac.com | ||

Having been just a kid when Ford was president, I can say I have also been surprised to hear the many references to his faith. I always find myself looking for the buzz words that people often say at funerals, but have been surprised to learn so much about the apparent integrity of this man who many referred to as one who was the 'right man for the job' at the time.' I was reminded of the passage in Romans that talks about God putting leaders in place. That seemed to be true of Ford as he was vice president by 'accident' (since Nixon thought he was 'confirmable' over other, preferrable choices) and then with Nixon's resignation, his becoming the president. It's the little glimmers like that that encourage me that perhaps God really does have this mess of a world in control! I didn't get to see the burial coverage, but hopefully they'll cover it on the news somewhere...though I doubt those will be the sound-bite words they choose to broadcast. I look back on my sketchy memories of Carter as president; I was in my early 20's, and politics wasn't my first love(!), but I remember how I felt a bit disparaging of him because he didn't fit my Adventist framework. I look back at him now realizing that he probably was a true Christian. His talk of his faith I always took to be opportunisitic talk, but history seems to support that he really does take his Christianity seriously. I've thought several times about the significance of God setting up our presidents as He does all rulers and powers. Amazing. Colleen | ||

Like Colleen I grew up adventist and when a public figure mentioned their religious beliefs I thought it was done for nefarious reasons, never thinking they were sincere. Now, I think differently. I have watched the Ford Funeral and was thankful for the Godly priest who mentioned God in their prayers and commended Pres. Ford to His hands. I also listened to the ceremony in Washington, DC with the prayer being given by the SDA senate chaplain. It did not touch me like the episcopal priest today. God is still in charge and sets up and takes down rulers/presidents. They fulfill His purposes. God, you are awesome. Diana |
