I remember Wham! And I'm not referring to the 80's group fronted by George Michael either, although I wasn't particularly fond of Wham in any of its forms.

How about these other "Image of the Beast" varieties?

Stripples
Nuteena
Luncheon Loaf
Turkettes
Skallops
Fri-Chik
Linkettes
Vege Links
Big Franks
Vegeburger

I can't recall the name of those little canned breakfast snausages, but they were actually kinda tasty when fried.

I also can't remember the name of the little square fake steak product, but I do recall that they were manufactured from the toughest substance known to man, whatever that is... I think you could actually use them to replace the heatshield tiles on the space shuttle in a pinch.

Turkettes, fri-chik, fake steak.

Oh, yes I forgot about skallops! Since scallops are my second favorite seafood (right behind crab), I could never attempt an imitation. I do remember as a literature evangelist asking my district director why God would forbid us to eat something as good as shellfish? I can't remember his exact answer but it was something along the lines of things being sinful appearing very good. Being from the coast of South Carolina that was very hard to bear, but I gave it up for Jesus. (I do admire the dedication of SDA's, Mormons, etc, even though it's misplaced)

In that case, I guess those fake meats were pretty holy. :-O

Free, I remember that awful steak stuff, too, but can't remember the name. Most of the beef alternatives I just couldn't go for, mostly because of the horrible aftertaste. In 17 years, I never acquired a taste for it.

On another note (I'm so sorry this thread has gotten off-topic, U2) is that I am planning to purchase and eat only grass-fed beef and pasteurized pork and chicken as soon as the freezer is empty of the other stuff. Besides the improved taste, I'm not interested in getting mad cow disease. From what I understand, it's healthier with Omega-3's as well.

Morningstar Farms Stripples and Grillers are good. You can keep 'em in the freezer until needed and they don't have much fat. Is Tuno still around? That's one thing that I think is almost better than the real thing (Tuna). I have heard that over in Taiwan and the Orient they have fake shrimp and lobster. Somehow I doubt that the fake iced Shrimp would be better than the real stuff!

i realize my experience is not typical but I can identify with the comments left by others, in fact I'm laughing at memories from the past.

In the SDA church I've attended the past 16+ years I've been blessed with a wonderful worship service every Easter Sunday. I've been so blessed worshipping and being touched be the realization of what He has done for me. This is not only on Easter Sunday which is special but every day of my life. He is GREAT.

I know this is all part of a journey God has placed me on and I ask only that He keeps me faithful to His will in my life.

In Him,

Richard rtruitt@mac.com

PS: I have never understood how anyone could eat vegie Scallops. . . yuck. I enjoy good vegetarian food but it shouldn't need to be fake meat to be good.

Yes, Richardómy Richard always says the same thing: if one is going to be vegetarian, eat vegetarian food, not fake meat!

(I loved the deep-fried Skallops they used to serve with tartar sauce at the WWC cafeteria!)

I haven't been reading for over a week since our house has been rather busy with our three children and six grandchildren. What a wonderful time!!!!!

Finally got to look at the Forum today, and just really enjoyed the memories of that awful stuff they passed as "health food". Doesn't anyone remember glutten steaks! One could buy them in a can or make them yourself by mixing flour and water and beating and pounding it over and over until it came to a sort of lump of whatever!! I watched my aunt make some once, and never would eat it again! I am glad we did have beef and chicken in our house growing up; but when the relatives came to visit; out would come the cans of that veggie fake meat. My digestive system never could handle that stuff! Always felt kind of sorry for that poor little soybean that couldn't just be itself! Could never figure out why it was OK to eat fake ham, etc and not be able to eat the real thing. Oh "what a tangled web" the SDA's weave!

Easter was not a time to celebrate when I was growing up. Couldn't ever understand that either. (no wonder I left the SDA church :-). We did get eggs and talk about the easter bunney. But how very joyful it is now to celebrate OUR RISEN SAVIOR. Praise God!

Translation

Stripples ñ Old shoe tongues.
Nuteena - A kid I knew at school.
Luncheon Loaf ñ Nothing for dinner.
Turkettes ñ Female turkeys.
Skallops ñ If you eat that itíll cause your hair to fall out.
Fri-Chik ñ Baby chicks that died from heat exhaustion.
Linkettes ñ A female internet link.
Vege Links ñ An internet link that makes this stuff look good.
Big Franks ñ Got so hungry we ate Uncle Frank. (Sigh)
Vegeburger ñ Staring at McDonalds while chewing Celery.

No wonder Adventist are so sad, they donít have anything to eat.
They never celebrate because it would mean eating stuff.

My favorite meal.

10 ounce Prime Rib with (baked potato, sour cream, butter, chopped fresh chives), a small vegetable, strong coffee (Canít drink it anymore though)

I have made my own gluten before (rinsing out whole wheat flour, kneading it, cutting it up and boiling it in a soy sauce, etc broth, UGH). I am with River now...I made my husband a prime rib on New Year's Eve and smiled as he proclaimed it delicious! :-)

Amen to celebrating the resurrection of Jesus!

Since becoming a Christian, it is so nice to be able to eat anything we want without having to worry, what will happen to me if I eat it. Now, I just thank God for it and eat.

Oh, RiveróI'm just getting dinner in the oven, and I'm hungry! I'd just like to help myself to that steak and baked potato!

My grandmother used to make gluten. When I was in college I'd go to her house for Sabbath dinner; she loved for me to come and bring my friends. Homemade gluten was often the centerpiece accompanied by her fried potatoes. It wasn't exactly health reform food, but it was vegetarian!! (I did love those fried potatoes...!)

it's the chives that make the potato good and transfers over to Prime Rib. you mix the chives in the sour cream and put a big dollop of it on yer tater don't ye know.

I celebrate Easter Sunrise every morning when light comes through my window.
I don't hunt eggs unless my wife cleaned the refer.
I have to ask my wife where everything is, no matter how many times she shows me and no matter if it is always in the same place.
the first thing out of my mouth when my wife gets up is "Wheres the........?"

No, what makes the potatoe good with the Prime Rib is the Au Jus sauce, then just a tiny bit of sour cream to top it all off. I'm just thankful I didn't grow up vegetarian! I remember some fun potlucks at Colleens house helping 'em out a little with various meats that were cooking....

This is just one more thing. SDA is all about shadows. Shadows of meat and worst of all the shadow of Jesus Christ, the Sabbath.

I remember the first thanksgiving dinner we had at B's parents house. My older son didn't realize vegetarians had 'fake' meats, and loaded the 'turkey' on his plate. I have no idea what it was, but he was GREATLY disappointed with his first bite. B's SIL saved him from being completely embarrassed as he spit it out saying 'well, at least now you know you don't like it.' As I recall, there wasn't much at that meal worth eating, and we were sorry there wasn't a mcdonalds available! Mashed potatoes only go so far!

My ex-BIL and I developed a decade-long tradion of disappearing for a short while after Thanksgiving dinner (and I use that term loosely) so we could hit the Wendy's drive-thru in St. Helena. If not for Wendy's "open til midnight" policy, we would have gone to bed hungry many a Thanksgiving night.

I suppose we collectively rationalized that our guilt would be relieved by bedtime prayer, but our hunger would last all night. We both preferred short-term guilt over long-term hunger.

Thank God I no longer feel the need to strain out veggie turkey in order to swallow a double cheeseburger!

The Gospel: Go for the good stuff!

Hey! I know that place, although my preference was A and W. If it wasn't for the fast food joints in St. Helena I would have starved during my time at PUC. I worked the dairy and we got out AFTER the caf. shut down on Friday---so then what do you do? Silly question as St. Helena is just down the hill.........
