I've been unable to drop by here for a few days, but I thought I'd pop in and share a parallel passage to Rev.19:10 that was brought to my attention yesterday. Blessings & enjoy!

At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, "Do not do it! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy."
(Revelation 19:9-10)
As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence. But Peter made him get up. "Stand up," he said, "I am only a man myself... You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all... All the prophets testify about Him that everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins through His name."

The other day I was reading something that quoted this verse (or rather, passage) in Revelation, and suddenly it struck me over the head what was going on...

The angel had just showed John many prophetic visions of the future and given John a "message" to declare to God's people. Not only that, this messenger ("Angel" means "messenger" in Greek) explicity said his words were God's words.
At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, "Do not do it! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! [Because] the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy."
Having just worshiped the "messenger" instead of the Lord, the messenger says, "NO! I am one of your brothers who holds to the testimony of Jesus"---that is, one who proclaims the same "testimony" (Gospel) that John and his brothers (other believers) proclaimed. The whole purpose of prophecy is to continue giving this same testimony, this same Gospel.
We are not to fall down at the feet of someone speaking God's words (whether they are or are not really God's words!). We can receive God's words but we are to worship God, not messengers.
It occurred to me that this is the exact text, the precise passage which describes what happened in Adventism. The messenger was in fact not speaking God's words, and as a result of reverencing (worshiping) the words of the messenger (and as the result of merely trying to harmonize the messenger's words with Scripture), we wandered from the "testimony of Jesus" that the angels, John and his brothers testified of. |
