The thought just struck me why God called the Israelites the "Children" of Israel. Because they needed to be taught like children -- not adults. That is why they had 613 rules bound up within the "Law of Sin and Death" (Romans 8) to tell them every single thing to do and not do.

I have been recently studying Clay Peck's (Grace Place) excellent set of New Covenant Studies at http://www.graceplace.org/default.aspx?pid=58

His second study, "The Old and New Covenants" at http://www.graceplace.org/media/documents/The%20Old%20and%20New%20Covenant1.pdf brings out a real good example.

"The younger and less mature one is, the more detailed the rules and guidelines need to be. When God brought the Israelites out of Egypt (where they had been slaves for several hundred years) he met them right where they were. He established a covenant with them that literally contained hundreds of laws. And those laws were spelled out in great detail."

In some ways I like that metaphor, but in other ways it gives the impression that some day God's Children would eventually grow up. God sent His Son because we needed rescued from our immaturity and childishness. We needed him to grow us up. I like the metaphor that the law was a tutor, because a tutor doesn't show us the whole picture but only moves us in the direction of understanding what we currently have in front of us, then finally, when we have all the information (the blinders taken off of our eyes), we can see clearly... God for Who He Is, in Jesus Christ.

I also highly recommend the Grace Place web site. His studies helped us make the final leap from Adventism to mainstream Christianity.
