Funny, my pastor must not have liked confrontation either because he didn't even try to talk me into staying. Perhaps they know their doctrines won't stand under scrutiny? |

Perhaps, Pheeki! Cy, I'm thankful. God will continue to strengthen you as you speak the truth. Keep us posted. Colleen |

It is a common practice in Adventism to keep their members somewhat intimidated from asking any probing theological questions--especially in public. By their being a very judgmental group anyway, one would have to be very bold and tough-skinned to differ with the Sabbath School teacher in most cases. After all, we were always worried what others in the class would think of us. Would they label us as hopeless heretics? For example, to even whisper the name of Dr. Desmond Ford in Sabbath School would have been unthinkable and most scary. Many times the Sabbath School teacher will attempt to control the discussion by allowing only certain individuals to speak or at best give you only one, brief opportunity to share your thoughts. Wow, I well remember how scary it felt to differ or speak up in Sabbath School class. My wife would beg me (whisper in my ear) to not say anything (smile). By the way, leaving Adventism has changed my wife's shyness completely. She has now become a powerful proponent of the Gospel during Sunday School classes and other groups. She has become far more vocal in public than I am about theological matters. We remind our new church friends that we have not always felt this comfortable and safe in sharing our thoughts publicly. Indeed, this is another freedom we have found in Christ. Praise God! Dennis Fischer |

Thanks, Randy and Carol, for your prayers! It takes me a while to figure things out, and as I debriefed Mrs. Cy on what happened during our meeting, I realized some things were said that really upset me! I thought I was OK with how my family and I have been treated by the local church, and in the past I always framed what was said to me as the speaker talking in "Adventese." For example, I've been told I needed to be the "spiritual head of the household," probably meaning I needed to lead my wife into Adventism. I used to shrug stuff like that off. The SDA pastor did say "I read the same Bible you do" (another SDA pastor said the same thing to my parents!). The pastor did say one Adventist thing, "we'll celebrate Sabbath in heaven," and I asked him to prove it. He gave me Isaiah 66:23, I read it, thought about it in context, and it had nothing to do with celebrating Sabbath in heaven, only that we'll forever worship God: quote:From one New Moon to another and from one Sabbath to another, all mankind will come and bow down before me," says the LORD.
(Adventists certainly don't celebrate New Moons, do they!) <Shaking head> I used to try to defend that stuff with weak lines just like the pastor did... Tonight is the SDA church board meeting where I'll have to explain that I do not want to be a leader (or even a member) anymore. Funny thing is, the church is so small that nearly everyone has a leadership position. Resting in Christ, Cy |

Funny how the details filter into view AFTER the fact, isn't it, Cy! How did the board meeting go? Praying for you and Mrs. Cy... Colleen |

Thank you, Colleen. Nothing really came out at the board meeting while I was there. One of my little girls came down with a stomach flu Sunday night, and I then started getting it Monday evening. I attended the board meeting but left early. That probably gave them a chance to talk about me :-) Cy |

A daughter that shares! What a blessing! I've never quite figured out how to get them to distinguish "when" to share.... |

so funny how all of our letters are almost identical, isn't it? Guess that shows unity in the Church. |

Dear Sabra, I have no intention to beat a dead horse, but last spring a number of us were booted off the R/S site for "conspiring" against the SDAs there. None of us cleared our posts on R/S with the others, but we were consistent with one another when we did speak. You are so right, that does show unity in the Church. God bless us all, even our confused SDA brethren. |

Yes, Melissa, my girls will rarely share anything they really like, and often will only become interested in something if another of the girls has it in their hands... But it really is cute when one of the two-year-old twins voluntarily shares. Cy |

Aren't 2-year olds precious? We got a boatload of snow yesterday (12-14" at my house), and at 10 pm last night, I decided to make trip 2 out to shovel the drive. My 2 year old wanted to go, and though it was well past his bedtime, it was so bright because of the snow I opted to let him out with me. So, bundled to the top of his little head, the snow was up to his thighs. And he sat down in it like sand and said he was going to bury his legs. It was a dry snow, so it wouldn't make a snow ball and that was somewhat disheartening and confusing for the kid, but I just had to chuckle as he drug his shovel across the yard "helping". :-) Now here's a pre-teen for you....my older son's friends decided to build a fort and one of the kids asked if I minded if they shoveled all the snow off the drive.... Now, I wonder what they thought I was doing??!! Gotta love it! |
