"All power is given Me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations." Matthew 28:18-19

"The basis of missionary appeals is the authority of Jesus Christ, not the needs of the heathen. We are apt to look upon Our Lord as One Who assists us in our enterprises for God. Our Lord puts Himself as the absolute sovereign supreme Lord over His disciples. He does not say the heathen will be lost if we do not go; He simply says - 'Go ye therefore and teach all nations.' Go on the revelation of My sovereignty; teach and preach out of a living experience of Me.

"'Then the eleven disciples went...unto a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.' (v. 16). If I want to know the universal sovereignty of Christ, I must know Him for myself, and how to get alone with Him; I must take time to worship the Being Whose Name I bear. 'Come unto Me' - that is the place to meet Jesus. Are you weary and heavy laden? How many missionaries are! We banish those marvelous words of the universal Sovereign of the world to the threshold of an after-meeting; they are the words of Jesus to his disciples.

"'Go ye therefore....' Go simply means live. Acts 1:8 is the description of how to go. Jesus did not say - Go into Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria, but, 'Ye shall be witness unto Me' in all these places. He undertakes to establish the goings.

"'If ye abide in Me, and My words abide in you..." - that is the way to keep going in our personal lives. Where we are placed is a matter of indifference; God engineers the goings.

"'None of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself....' That is how to keep going till we're gone."

Helovesme2,
Thank you so much for the quotes above. Now I know what all this means. As an SDA I felt like I was always disappointing God because I did not get out and do things for Him. Then the Holy Spirit taught me that I can represent God where ever I am, on a daily basis. I liked that much better. It is not guilt producing like I used to be when I was younger.
Thank you God for teaching me. You are awesome.

Mary, thank you. "Where we are placed is a matter of indifference; God engineers the goings." How wonderful.

Mary, thanks again for another great Chambers devotional. I really like that first statement. "The basis of missionary appeals is the authority of Jesus Christ, not the needs of the heathen". Much evangelism today is instead directed at the needs of the heathen, rather than the direct authority and teaching of God's Word.

yes!

our Lord's primary obediance was to the will of the Father, not to the needs of the people--the saving of people was the natural outcome of His obediance eto the Father. If i am devoted to the cause of humanity, I will soon be exhausted... Oswald Chambers My Utmost 6/19

But the cheif motivation behind Paul's service was not love for others, but love for His Lord. If our devotion is to the cause of humanity, we will be quickly defeated.... Oswald again, 2/23

The only only concern of Christian workers should be their concentration on God...The only responsibility you have is to stay in living constant touch with God and to see that you allow nothing to hinder your cooperation with Him....Oswald Chambers, My Utmost 4/23

What a neat quote. I was once a "missionary" to a foreign land. I soon discovered that it was "I" that needed the gospel. And it was while on foreign soil that I began my baby steps out of the SDA church - altho, I didn't know it at the time. I came home realizing that being a missionary was all about the heart and taking advantage of whatever opportunity came my way WHEREEVER I happened to be.

"Go simply means live" - Wow! I love that!
Thanks for sharing. :-) Linda

Not knowing where best to post this, I'll choose the "missionary" thread.

Yesterday at the Ginny Owen concert she said something very simple but powerful to me. I don't remember who she quoted so I cannot give it proper credit. I think her pastor quoted it, but but from who? Javagirl, if you remember, please let me know.

She said that witnessing is basically just one beggar going to another beggar and telling him where to find bread.

I thought that was powerful and deep!

Love you all, Carol

Sounds like a quote from Brennan Manning or one of his mentors.

Carol, I dont remember the source either, but what a great remark.

You and the other formers who attended the concert acted as missionaries to me. You didnt judge me because I am SDA. You didnt "write off" my relationship with Jesus based on what church roster my name is listed on. I loved sharing the experiences and journey at dinner. And most importantly, I appreciate the men, who watched football, and talked sports and politics with my husband. That was the first time in many months he has stepped foot into a church. He is especially wary of Baptist churches, as he grew up in a Southern Baptist church. It was great to see him hanging out with Christian men and not feeling judged because he does not accept Christ as the son of God. I think he feared the night would be some sort of "spiritual intervention" directed at him. The real missionary acts were that of acceptance and loving attitudes, and for that I am most touched and grateful.
