My husband grew up SDA, knew only SDAs bacially until he met me in college. When he was 13 he was baptized in the SDA church. He hasn't attended an SDA church since our marriage, and over the past 10 years of our marriage, he has been untwisting the threads of Adventism from the truth. About 7 years ago, he told me he really didn't identify himself with the SDA church anymore at all. About 2 years ago, he finally requested that his name be removed form the SDA books. And today, he impulsively decided to be baptized at our (non-denominational Christian) churches baptismal service. It really goes to show that even when one is dedicated to Christ and following Him 100%, it takes a long time to shake the vestiges of Adventism! God is good. -tanya- | ||

Tanya - That is great to hear, thank you. I was baptized adventist 16 years ago and was married to a christian non adventist 15 years ago. Although I attended the SDA Church frequently for about 4 or 5 years, I later rarely went. I attended from time to time because I always had that feeling that I had to. As a result, I often discouraged my husband from attending his church. He has been praying for me, but I would like to ask for prayers for him, for what he has been through with me. He was a very faithful christian when he married me, but I have discouraged him over the years a lot. Since my eyes have been opened and I don't want to believe what I've been taught and I want to live for Christ only, we have been attending church together with our children. Today he would not have gone to church if a relative didn't call him and say he wanted to go with us. He does need to be somewhat persuaded to get back into going to church and feeling good about his faith. I want to be baptized again, but I still need some untwisting from the adventist teachings. | ||

My husband and i were talking yesterday about his journey through Adventism, and we realized that as hard as it was and is to grow up SDA and then try to separate truth from fiction as he came out of Adventism, it is still a useful background to have. It gives us a sharper eye for legalism, and a basis for comparison, to know truth from twistedness. There is a song that we sing at our church that really means a lot to me. It talks about dancing with God in a place where religion finally dies, where you lose your selfish pride. It means a lot to me because I have seen what focus and reliance on pervasive religion does, and have experienced what it is like, on the flipside, to just trust Christ... to live for Him. We have trusted Him with our life, our finances, our parenting, turned everything over to Him, and the ensuing "fall", as we took that leap of faith, was scary at first. But God has given us SO much more than we ever gave up. Not only in terms of our marriage and our relationships, but financially, and opportunity-wise, in every aspect of our lives. Now my husband talk to his SDA family, and he hears the terminology, and sees the paranoia, the confusion, and the constant striving, and it really saddens him. We keep praying that we can continue to show them our passion for Christ. It is strange to know that they are afraid for us, especially my husband, they think he has "walked away from his faith". When in truth, he was walked away from legalism and right into Christ's arms. -tanya- | ||
