I know that this is not a political forum, and I hope I am not out of line here. But eclipsed by the hurricane Katrina news, was news of the death of Chief Justice Rehnquist. Did any of you catch the televised memorial service yesterday on the steps of the supreme court? It was very moving and at the time I watched it, I had just finished a 24 hour shift, but it still brought tears of pride to my eyes as they honored this great man. They pointed out that he was a good Lutheran, and man of faith. Most of the current supreme court justices were there, and his good friend and heir apparent John Roberts was also there. I was most moved by a scripture reading of the entire Psalm 139. Especially interesting was when the minister started reading at verse 13 "For you created my inmost being: you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made..." The chief justice beleived these words of scripture, and lived what he believed by trying to influence the court in a pro-life direction. But how interesting that they chose this particular scripture to read! As a resident of the state of Calif., I was very distressed to read today, that while all this hurricane news was happening, that the state legislature of Calif. has voted to make gay marriage the law of the land. This is where liberalism leads. These liberal politicians literally defied God's law openly. This is what happens when Christians don't care if they vote or who they vote for. In Adventism we were admonished to always go against the law maker who cared about decency and good morality, because they might bring on the national Sunday law. Let's pray that God will sovereignly act through the Senate and voters to get judges and justices who still honor God's law. Stan | ||

Stan, I didn't get to see the coverage of the funeral. However, I did hear that the CA governor won't sign the legislation regarding gay marriage because it would violate something passed 5 years ago saying marriage was between a man and a woman. Maybe hope yet?? | ||

Right Melissa, I should have given my own state voters more credit when I posted late last night. We did pass prop 22 by over 60%majority saying that mrriage was between a man and a woman. Gov. Arnold will hopefully veto the bill, but he personally has no problem with gay marriage, so this is not a Democrat vs. Republican issue. But he will be political dead meat if he would sign this bill. But it is significant that this is the first time in American history that both houses of a state legislature voted to make gay marriage legal. Stan | ||

Stan, I too missed the televised service. For years I questioned the churches non-involvement position relative to politics, local, state and national. The sick rationalle was always tied in with the Sunday law boogie-man. It's actually refreshing now to expose ourselves to the issues, read the pros and cons and decide on our own....BUT to vote! I have also dreamed of discovering in the back-waters of America a true Statesman. I have almost lost all hope in one appearing. Perhaps the Chief Justice came close. Confucius wrote: "He who governs by moral excellence may be compared to the polestar, which keeps its place, while all other stars bow toward it." We pray daily for truth and justice to prevail in the centers of world politics. It is comforting to take hope in the Sovereign will of God taking place; either in the good or in the bad. It is very interesting that John Roberts, the man President Bush has picked to replace William Rehnquist was a supreme court clerk for Rehnquist. I caught some of the Senate hearings today, and John Roberts seems like a real statesman himself. I think we can feel somewhat encouraged that if this man is confirmed, that we will have a strong moral leader as chief justice for the next 30 years or so. Since he is Roman Catholic, I wonder what the SDA religious liberty department is saying about him. Surely he will steer the court in the direction of a national Sunday law...Hmmm? Stan | ||

I thought Gov. Schwartzennegar was refusing to sign the gay marriage legistation. He has agreed to acceptance of civil union which would give the individuals a legal status regarding wills, trusts, authority in case of emergency, you know, all that legal stuff. Back when I went to a SDA boarding high school there sure was a lot of inapproiate sexual goings on with kids of the same gender in the dorms. The staff pretended to not notice. Then if a girl actually ended up pregnant the poor girl and her family were a complete disgrace within Adventism. It was too weird to even try to make sense of. I heard in North Hollywood is a SDA gay church. | ||

Stan, I also heard part of his speach and thought it quite impressive. He seemed to have quite a level-headed logic about him. Seemed very thoughtful. | ||

Melissa, the more I see this guy Roberts during these hearings, the more confident I am that the supreme court will at least be led by a man of great moral conviction. I still need to do my web search to see what R/S, and other SDAs are saying about this Catholic chief justice nominee...actually I don't really care--isn't it great to be free of the fear of national Sunday laws? As a kid, we were obsessed with fear over when the supreme court was going to announce its decision to implement this law. Stan | ||

As of yesterday the GC hasn't said a peep about John Roberts, at least not officially. I am sure they will be all in a huff since he is a Catholic!!! Horrors of horrors!!!! I am glad to see that he is standing tough and not allowing himself to be ripped apart during the hearings. | ||

Hi guys: I got an email from the "North American Religious Liberty Association" yesterday. It was an article written by James Standish. The email article basically says we need to be leary of John Roberts and make sure that he will uphold our 'values' (paraphrasing). It also goes on to say that we should be aware that "something profound appears to be at work in the world" due to the recent hurricane and tsunami. I wish I could get the link! The website is www.religiousliberty.info. I have the article saved if anyone would like me to forward it to them. It is rather lengthy so I don't want to take up space here.
