I received this from an SDA cousin, who would like me back in the "remnant" church. She sends me stuff like this occasionally. This one I decided to share with you. I thought at first I would watch it, but now I am not sure. Mr. Doss loved God, I am sure. I do not fault him. I just do not like how the SDA church uses things like this. Anyway, make any comments you want, as you all, always do. I've seen the complete film and it's very well done. It really doesn't 'bang the drum' for the SDA church so much as it tells the story of a real hero. I was surprised to hear several swear words in interviews with old Army buddies of Desmonds'. I would have thought that whoever made the film would have made sure to cut those out, but they didn't. It's a film I would highly recommend for viewing on this upcoming Memorial Day weekend.......... |

I second Loneviking's recommendation. The documentary was very well done, indeed. When I saw it, it didn't come across to me as a promo for the SDA church, but rather a telling of a story about a true American hero. Here was a peculiar and timid guy who had been ridiculed by his own fellow servicemen who ended up saving the lives of over 75 of some of these same soldiers in a bloodbath on Okinawa in WW2, single-handedly. Really a tremendous testament to the man's bravery and faith in God no matter what religion he espouses. There is absolutely no question that God's hand was on him that day. If you get the chance to see it, you won't be sorry. |

This will not be any great evangelistic opportunity for the church but a possibly great PROSELYTIZING opportunity. SADventism does virtually NO true evangelism! It is all virtually proselytizing! Their object is not to present Christ as man's only hope of salvation but to convince others to become SADventists with them! JWD |

When I was a teeenager at Mount Vernon Academy, the Ohio Conference President at that time, Donald W. Hunter, invited me and another student to his home one Sabbath, where we had lunch with Desmond Doss. Doss was a very humble and self-effacing man; not at all the Hollywood image of a hero. Which convinced me that he was "the real thing!" |

JWD, you said "SADventism does virtually NO true evangelism! It is all virtually proselytizing! Their object is not to present Christ as man's only hope of salvation but to convince others to become SADventists with them!" Boy howdy! I couldn't agree more! The primary mission of the Seventh-day Adventist church, from day one to today, is to steal sheep from pastures that other shepherds tend. |

My son and I have plans to spend the evening of the 30th watching the Doss special. My son volunteers as a leader at Pathfinders and he is carreer military so he should find the program very interesting, as I am sure I will. I googled Desmond Dosses name and read the story about him as well as other stories about him. I doubt if there could be a more decent pwerson anyware. He seems to be a 100% true Ameerican hero. |

I'm not sure how old I was but I remember Desmond Doss speaking at a meeting I was at. The most lasting impression I can remember was his humility and lack of pride. That still sticks with me many years later. Richard |

I had heard a rumor that Desmond Doss, actually left Adventism at one time, but I don't know where I heard it. Stan

Stan, Just wondering if we have an official list of those who have left? "notches on the church steeple" instead of "bedpost". Said with tongue firmly in cheek ! ! Richard |

If I remember correctly, it seems like the documentary showed him still active in the little SDA church up on Signal Mountain, TN I think it was. I'd be shocked if he was ever out of the church. It would be interesting to see a list of who has left. I wonder about academy and college mates. I'm also interested to know which SDA pioneers denounced EGW as a prophet and/or left the church. Besides dear old Dudley Canright?! Yes, that is an interesting question/thought, Heretic. Knowing how Dudley's story was fabricated for the church, I suspect it would be hard to discover the truth about many people. Colleen |

Heretic, did you know that J.N. Andrews, after whom Andrews University is named, had very serious problems with accepting EGW as a prophet? I don't remember all the details, but he went through a real crisis over her. |

I think probably just about all of the SDA pioneers doubted EGW at one point or another. Dirk Anderson has a list of all of EGW's doubters--and Ellen herself even made the list! She would say things like, "I sometimes doubt my own experience" and "I fear I am becoming an infidel," etc. Here is the link to his list: http://www.ellenwhite.org/egw70.htm The Ballenger brothers are not on his list, but they left the SDA church.
