To all the women who have children, of all ages, I want to wish each of you a blessed and wonderful, HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY. May God bless you with the wisdom of Solomon to deal with each child. They go through our lives only once, so this is not a trial run. It is the real thing. We mothers are nurses, doctors, therapists, housekeepers, chauffeurs, teachers, coaches, cooks, all in one day. The role can change at a moments notice. It is the most demanding job on the earth, but it is a very rewarding job and I for one am glad I had it and still do. God, be with each Mother that reads this, that each one will know you as a personal friend. Help them as they deal with the daily problems that come up in their lives as Mothers. Being a Mother is a very important job as it can affect all eternity, so help each one of us to teach our children in the way they should go. Thank you for Jesus, who made this possible and for the Holy Spirit who teaches us. God you are awesome. Diana | ||

I also wish my sisters Happy Mother's Day, and I am thankful that God nurtures us with the tenderness of a Mother. Isn't is wonderful that He not only is a Father to the fatherless, but he keeps us safe under His wings and protects us as a Mother does? He is a mother to all who never had or who lost a mother. Being a mother is a great gift and responsibility from God. To quote you, Diana, "Thank you for Jesus, who made this possible and for the Holy Spirit who teaches us." Happy Mother's Day! Colleen | ||

Has anyone here taken a class from the late Madelyn Haldemann? I took "The Life and Teachings of Jesus" from her back in 1990 when I was at La Sierra University (then LLU-Riverside). I'll never forget that first class period when I was sitting all the way in the rear of the room, up against the wall. We bowed our heads to pray at the beginning of class and then she began, "Dear Mother in heaven..." I just about gave myself whiplash jerking my head up in astonishment and I saw that over half the class had done the same thing. I'll never forget that. She was indeed a character. Our (female) assistant pastor gave the sermon today on the Proverbs 31 woman, how she was this impossible ideal that many women feel frustrated about because they are nothing like! She then read that verse in Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you," says the LORD. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope." She said that while Proverbs 31 may be the ideal mother, God has a plan that He chose for each of our children, and the most important piece of that plan is He chose US to be their mothers! I thought that was very powerful. I have been a little hesitant having a woman pastor, since I did not grow up with one, but I realized today this was a sermon a man could not give! (She has four children) A woman's perspective of the Bible is just different. Anyway, Happy Mothers Day to all mothers who feel inadequate!! Heretic, "Dear Mother in Heaven"???, Wow! I knew Adventism in Loma linda had sunk to new lows, but this is unbelievable. On Saturday, on Mother's Day Weekend, I just happened to tune across the Loma linda Univ church service, and the sermon was titled "The Way of the Cross", by Chaplain Davis. He said he was at a chaplain's retreat, and a Lutheran chaplain said to him, I don't hear you SDAs speaking very much about the Death of Christ Davis' reply to him was, "Well, I like to concentrate on the Life of Christ leading up to the cross, and His wonderful example". This is why liberal adventism is so clearly foreign to Biblical christianity. But, that Marilyn Haldeman prayer you mentioned.... Stan | ||

That statement also sounds like something a conservative/traditional/historical Adventist would say--I guess almost any type of Adventist. Liberal and historical Adventists really aren't that different when it comes down to their core "gospel"--they both deny the atonement of Jesus on the cross and concentrate on Jesus being an "example" for us to follow. I think that in Liberal Adventism, there is a movement to make "God" more gender-neutral or something. The feminists certainly don't like to think of God as a "He"! (As a sidenote, the Mormons believe that we have a heavenly "Mother," in addition to the heavenly "Father.") Jeremy (Message edited by jeremy on May 09, 2005) | ||

I know that in the LLU/La Sierra areas, there are quite a few women who have incorporated feminist theology into their view of Adventist Christianity. In the early 90s (admittedly quite a while ago now!), I went with a friend to a meeting of "Women's Church" which was held in a Loma Linda home one evening. At that time, this group held regular meetings--I think monthly, if I remember right--to discuss various theological/philosophical ideas. I remember that this particular meeting was moderated by a woman who held at that time an associate pastorship in an area SDA church (She later held a senior pastor position.) They discussed an article which had been mailed to everyone (except us) in advance. The article discussed the idea that the cross was not a good symbol for women because it was symbol "divine child abuse". What mother, after all, would allow her son to be killed? It was really grating to me, even then, and I felt outraged at the lack of respect and reverence for God and for Jesus' sacrifice. The idea that women needed to stand under something other than the cross was just blasphemous. It was interesting: after the meeting was "adjourned", my friend and I and one other woman who had spoken out in defense of Christianity left the house. We convened on the front lawn in the dark and spontaneously began debriefing, both outraged and in shock over what we had just witnessed. We must have stood there for at least 30 min, and as the time passed, we noticed that not one other woman left. We realized they must have been inside discussing our position and viewpoints as well. Yes, there is a strong feminist agenda running through much of liberal "Christianity". It seems to be based, bottom line, on "goddess theology", if one truly pursues it to its source. It tends to be matriarchal instead of patriarchal, and the focus is on God as Mother instead of on God as Father. The tradition of goddess worship is ancient, and feminist theology has taken many of its premises and adapted them into a Christian framework. If we believe the Bible to be the authentic word of God, however, we can't negate the Biblical picture of God the Father loving us and providing for us with the compassion of both a mother and a father. And we can't negate the Fatherhood of God. The Bible protrays Him as our Father on purpose. Colleen | ||
