I was watching a lenghty documentary on BYU television about the history of the Mormon church and they referred to "the spirit of prophecy" and "the pen of inspiration" when referring to the writings of Joseph Smith. I almost fell out of my chair! I have heard that Joseph Smith and Ellen White crossed paths somewhere along the line, but to hear those same exact phrases, used in the same context, to support the writings of the founder of a cultic denomination that claims to be Christian and wants to be accepted as mainstream Protestant, nearly made me choke on my Cheerios. | ||

Oh my goodness! That reminds me of a JW friend of my sister's. I remember her being so sure of herself and her doctrine. "We have the truth." " I know I'm a part of the 144,000" Etc., Etc. I wonder how many of the JW rank and file fully understand the "truth" they supposedly have on the 144,000. Unless your friend is fairly old she can't be one of the JW 144,000. According to JW theology the 144,000 (or "Annointed Class") were already chosen by May 31, 1935. These are the only ones who are actually going to Heaven. If your friend wasn't a member by 1935 (there's only about 8,600 of these left alive) then the best she can hope to be is part of the "great crowd" (about 4 million other JWs) that will live in the new paradise earth. Go to www.watchthetower.org It is very interesting. You can go on his site where he has titled "Watchtower Steals Artwork" and see for yourself the art that the WT organization stole from the SDA Bible Story Books. I wrote to Mr. Blzzard, the owner of the website that the WT stealing from the SDA was no big deal. After all EGW stole a large amount of her writings. He wrote back, "Birds of a feather..." It is a website for JW's very similiar to this one for SDA's. Actually go to the comments section and the stories are very similiar to the stories on here. | ||

Amazing how Smith, White and Russell all claimed to have the truth and yet contrast each other. I recall one co-worker who is a JW saying that a couple of Mormons came to their door and they had quite a session. Can you imagine their conversation trying to out "lie" each other? Clash of the Cults. Freeatlast, at least you were eating Cheerios....unlike what Ellen White was probably eating at the time of her visions...Fruit Loops. | ||

One block from my house is a small neighborhood grocery store. You know how these older neighborhoods have these tiny stores that are only one small room with the house being the back part of the store. That's it. The hippie who owns and runs his neighborhood store just wants to watch football (or whatever sport is in season at the time) with the sound on the t.v. off while he's blasting Jimi Hendrix music in his store. So, the JW's came over to prostilize him one day last summer. He told them he wasn't interested in studying with them right now but they could leave their literature and their phone #'s and then after he read their lterature if he wanted to study with them he'd give them a call. Then several days later two young Mormon men came by. He told them to come back at a certain date at a certain time about a week away. Then he called back the JW's and told them the date and time he wanted them to come to his store to teach him the truth. He gave the JW's the same date and time he'd set up with the Mormons to come by. Then when the day came he had his t.v. on behind his counter with the sound off and his Jimi Hendrix blasting real loud and the two young Mormom and the two JW's all came to his store at he same time. He introduced them to each other and then very polietly told them, "I know you all like to discuss religion. I hate to talk about religion. You can talk religion to each other. I'm gonna sit here watching football and listenig to Jimi Hendrix". Then he did just that. The Mormons and the JW's all just got irritated with the situtation and they all left. He recently told me he has not had a Mormon or JW back since then. We decided he must be on their list of addresses to avoid. And, he's glad for it. | ||

Susan, The former JW website address is: www.watchthetower.com (not org). The foremost former Mormon website is: www.utlm.org (Utah Lighthouse Ministry). Jerald and Sandra Tanner are doing a wonderful work. I get their SALT LAKE MESSENGER every month, and they also operate a bookstore in Salt Lake City. Every Mormon boy that comes to your door knows about the Tanner's. If you mention their name to them, the usual reply will be, "They are very bitter." This reply sounds very familiar for some reason (smile). It may be their official response as missionaries. Dennis J. Fischer | ||

Dennis, The part-time, semi-retired pastor at the church I attend (Lutheran) pastored a Lutheran church in Salt Lake City for around 30 years. His family shares some interesting and facinating stories. The wife worked at the local public elementary school in which around 90% of the student body were LDS. As a result of them being so closely involved with so many LDS people they got very involved in an outreach geared to Mormons. It is mostly former Mormons ministering Christianity but these folks I know are involved in the group because of their having been in that area for so long. The publication put out by these formers is called The Cross. They have quite an extensive amount of materials to order to learn about the LDS religion. This latest The Cross that I was sent I am planning to send to Dale R. If the words Mormon or LDS is substitutd for SDA then the stories could be interchangable. So much is so similiar. Not the doctrines and beliefs but the psychology, the mindset, the total committment to the organization above all else. It's almost uncany. | ||

I have friends and relatives in both the Mormon (LDS) and Jehovah's Witnesses faiths. While I would join neither, one thing I will say for the Witnesses is that they don't tout a "prophet" in their services nor will you ever hear much, if anything, about Mr. Russell (the supposed founder of the Witness religion). There are a number of Adventists who have doubts about Ellen White, and I'm predicting that as more people bring out into the open some of Ellen's strange ideas and beliefs, that there will be fewer and fewer converts to the Adventist faith. However, the very strong link to Ellen is a long way from becoming extinct. The Mormons, on the other hand, used to require belief in Joseph Smith as well as Christ in order to gain membership into their church. I'm not sure that this is still the case, but in any event, most Mormons hold to the notion that Joseph was a prophet and a "great guy" despite all the despicable things he said and did. | ||

At least the Mormons are more honest about their doctrinal position on Joseph Smith than the SDAs are about Ellen White. Mormons make no apology for saying that Smith's writings are an addition to Scripture. SDAs in practice do the same thing, but they are not honest enough to admit it! | ||

I went with a mormon friend to church once and they actually sang 'hymns' about Joseph Smith. I was a senior in high school and quite nieve to such things. I just couldn't believe the words I was reading. | ||

I know of one SDA "hymn" about Ellen G. White, which my sister was actually asked to sing for "sabbath school" just last year, soon after she quit attending the SDA cult! It was written by Herbert Work and is called "O Shepherd Divine." There is an SDA country/western singer who wrote songs about EGW, the 10 C and I forget what else. I bought his CDs for the other Christian music, but when I found out about EGW and her plagiarism, I threw all of them away. And Belvalew, you are right, they were perfect SDA songs. Mitsy, Interestingly, the founder of the Jehovah's Witnesses is buried in New York with the following title, under his name, inscribed on his headstone, "MESSENGER OF THE LORD." This reminds me of Herbert Douglass's recent book titled, "Messenger of the Lord." The commonalities of the four major cults of the nineteenth-century never cease to amaze me. Dennis Fischer | ||

Aside from the problems within Adventism, it still astounds me as to the number of converts to the Mormon faith each year. I continue to believe that many new converts know little about the man named Joseph Smith. In addition, there is much info (on the web and in various books) about their secret ceremonies performed in the temple, their views on the afterlife, and their distorted views about the Book of Mormon which is a made-up fable by a delusional man who stole his friends' wives. Of all the organized religions (or cults) around, I find it hard to believe that so many so-called educated and level-headed people don't do some research and question this cult which continues to try to masquerade as a "christian" church. The Mormon faith would be the first on my list of cults to avoid, the Adventists would be the second, although comparatively speaking, I think the Mormon faith is even more distorted than the Adventist faith. Guess it depends on your own perspective. |
