In honor of Reformation Day (October 31st), Ligonier, the educational ministry run by R.C. Sproul and his colleagues, is giving out the downloadable recordings of R.C.'s seminar on Luther and the Reformation for free. This is for today only. I've personally listened to this series on my iPod while jogging. R.C. does a great job explaining why the Reformation occurred: The doctrine of justification by faith. This is as juxtaposed with SDA teaching, which is that the reformation was somehow about priestly/papal authority, or how we do church. While these issues came up in the Reformation, they came up because of the core difference on justification. R.C. spends a lot of time talking about this difference between the Catholic and Protestant doctrines of justification. If you listen to his explanation of the Roman Catholic doctrine of justification, it is clear that it is virtually indistinguishable from the SDA doctrine. And it is also clear that the SDA doctrine of justification vis-a-vis the investigative judgment is totally incompatible with the Biblical Protestant doctrine of justification. In fact, Sproul details how the Roman Catholic doctrine is called an analytical justification. What that means is that the Roman Catholic church teaches that God analyzes everyone who has faith in Jesus Christ, to see if they have reached a point where, by cooperating with divine grace, they have become free of sin. Then, and only then, does God declare them righteous. This is exactly the same thing as what the SDA church teaches on the investigative judgment. I strongly suggest downloading this ten part series and if possible sharing it with SDA family. | ||
