I never understood this little nuance in SDA theology until this past week when I was reading Anthony Hoekema's book "Seventh-day Adventism."

He noted that EGW makes a distinction between your sins being PARDONED and your sins being BLOTTED OUT. It's certainly crazy-making, but certainly THIS is why Adventists can say they are saved by grace, but they still hold on to the IJ.

Interestingly, just yesterday I listed to an SDA sermon by the pastor of Mount Roubidoux SDA church in California. It was a series on the sanctuary and he said, very plainly, that some people are forgiven but they still need to be cleansed. And then he went on and on about how we need to rid our lives of sin if we intend to make it into the Kingdom. He said, you can come to Jesus as you are, but you need to be clean to come to the Father.

Now, this is a church that is supposedly progressive and grace-filled, yet they are preaching the same old Adventist message. So, I guess they're just progressive 'cause you can wear earrings, I don't know.

Just wondering if any of you had, in your years in Adventism, grasped (cognitively) the difference between pardon and blotting out or forgiveness and cleansing... Certainly we all absorbed the idea that we were on PROBATION.

Cloudwatcher~

YES~ I, "grasped (cognitively) the difference between pardon and blotting out
or forgiveness and cleansing...)" when I was an adventist.

The "sanctuary" doctrine is "crazy-making"! the fact it is being
taught in the year 2013, just shows that people can still
be deceived by satan.

This "doctrine" reminds me of the old saying:

"You can put lipstick on a pig, but its still a pig!"

Cloudwatcher,

Currently, some of the reading I've come across emphasizes the understanding that the cross (phase one of the atonement) dealt with the sacrifice for our sin. The terminology used is that Jesus offered a "complete sacrifice" at the cross event. This leaves room for and unfinished "atonement" that is handled by the IJ/sanctuary doctrine (phase two).

Got to love Hebrews 10:22 though: "let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water."

The New Covenant in Jesus' blood = forgiveness and a new heart!

I would like today tell that SDA preacher Jesus said, "I and my father are one. "
