Hi everyone, I'm doing a bit of research again and I heard Dale say that soul sleep was introduced after the big "disappointment." Seems like an interesting way to get out of their dilemma. Anyway, I just wondered if this idea was from the SDA movement or if other religions believed this at the time? Thank you! |

Here is one man’s thought on the topic of ‘Soul Sleep’: You need 'Soul Sleep' if you are going to have 'Investigative Judgment' because you cannot have saints who have died knowing they are saved before they are told they are in 'The Book of Life'. Of course there is another inconsistency in Adventist logic because the ‘dead in Christ’ are resurrected at the return of Jesus and wouldn’t be meeting their Savior in the air unless they are in fact saved and in the kingdom of God. The more you study Scripture the more Adventist theology becomes illogical and ridiculous. One issue is that Adventist theology doesn't realize there are two different judgments. Following upon the return of Christ and the collection of his saints, the first is the judgment of their works at the Judgment Seat of Christ for rewards which is unrelated to salvation. The Great White Throne Judgment follows upon the resurrection of the wicked dead who are not in the Book of Life and so are sent into the Lake of Fire. In any case ‘Soul Sleep’ is built around a few unrelated verses which are not studied within their context. For a person who has died to not know what is happening to those who are ‘under the sun’ doesn’t mean they are unconscious within the grave. It just means they no longer have contact with the physical world of the living. Phil |

Phil~ I agree with what you wrote in your post regarding 'Soul Sleep'~ Of course, 'egw' could not have saints who have died, knowing they are 'SAVED' in heaven before the 'Investigative Judgement' is finished! It seems to me that I read in 'egw' writings where she actually accuses the 'Apostles' of borrowing the idea of 'conscious Spirits', who are saved and with GOD, from the pagan religions! And then they decided to include this belief in 'Holy Writ' ! ~mj~ |

Good point, Phil. They sure are sly with twisting words and ideas. I'm just wondering who made up the soul sleep idea? Was it Crosier? That strange doctrine never seemed right to me! Krista |

Krista~ I believe if you go to the link I am providing below, you will have the answers to the questions you have asked in your post #55~ If memory serves me correctly, the information is written by a member here on the 'Forum'~ http://sogentlybroken.blogspot.com/2008/09/adventist-teaching-on-soul-sleep.html Not only for the adventist doctrine question, but the 'history' of the soul sleep belief. ~mj~ |

I would have to assume when Pastor Dale said it came after the Great Disappointment, he was referring to its introduction specifically in the SDA Church. The doctrine of Soul Sleep is known as "PSYCHOPANNYCHIA". John Calvin was already addressing it back in 1534. http://www.monergism.com/thethreshold/sdg/calvin_psychopannychia.html It never amazes me that almost every foul doctrines in some way has a representation in the SDA church. Thanks for this link, Wiredog...I'll read/study it soon. Re "foul doctrines"...well, that "handsome young man" angel that visited Ellen every night for years wasn't stupid, just a liar about the truth of God's Word. |

Nowisee, You're welcome. The document is not easy reading. I struggled with it and only 10% actually sunk in. I think my capability to read Olde English phraseology only extends back to 1800s. After that its a battle. Yes how about that handsome angelic guide, interesting that she had a spiritual "visitor". |

What a great find, Wiredog! I never knew soul sleep had such a fancy name, lol... It's also amazing to me how much true information is hidden from most Adventists. Sad. Most haven't even seen the 1889 newspaper article about EGW, which states: "Mrs. White is a plagiarist, a literary thief." |
