Today in the mail I had received some info from www.4jehovah.org along with a sticker to put on my door to keep the JWs from visiting me. What was interesting (first off I already knew that the SDAs and the JWs shared a common history)is that they share in some of the same doctrines. Both groups believe in Christ's Invisible Presence Occurred in 1874 (date was later changed to 1914); The Investigative Judgment--Christ's Inspection of Spiritual Food from 184-1878(later changed to 1914-1919);Conditional Mortality, Soul Sleep - Soul does not survive death. Resurrection of only the worthy, No Hell; Restoration of Paradise Earth. The first two I found the most interesting and am trying to figure out how. I would love to hear some feedback from some of you on the forum. | ||

I grew up Adventist and I've never heard that Adventists believe in Christ's invisible presence in 1874 or 1914. I think that doctrine is uniquely JW, as is Christ's inspection of spiritual food on any date. Not sure what conditional mortality is. Adventists do believe in soul sleep, although they don't describe it as the soul surviving death. They describe it as the soul is body+breath of God = soul. So when the breath of God leaves, your soul is sleeping or on hold until God breathes life back into your body, which he has renewed. And hell exists for the Adventists, it's just temporary. | ||

I did go into the web to see what conditional mortality is and here is what I found out. Conditional Immortality, as the name suggests, rests on the idea that human beings are not immortal by nature. This would be opposite to the Eternal Torment view that clearly implies that we are all immortal (if we live forever without the sustaining life of Christ following in us, then we must, by our very nature, possess immortality). Which is right? The Biblical evidence is completely unequivocal. Only God is immortal: Thanks Katarain for making me do some research on that. I definitely learned something. And I think you're right that the invisible presence and Christ's inspection of spiritual food is uniquely JW. | ||

Alison, that is one of the sticking points for me, too--the idea that we can be eternally tormented without the sustaining power of God, and thus would be immortal outside of Him. I don't know what hell will be like, but I do know that if it is eternal torment then God is the one providing the immortality. I just trust Him that whatever the answers are that He is a loving and just God, even if I don't understand how He could allow something. |
