I thought I would share the excerpt of one of the letters to the editors published in the December, 2012 issue of Adventist World we just received (pg. 18).
quote:Obesity is certainly a growing problem in our society, and it needs to be brought to our attention more frequently. One frustrating thing is to observe the physique of church members, teachers, pastors, and church leaders. It's amazing how many of the people who are pictured in our church papers are obese. It appears that many in our church do not recognize that the health message is the right arm of the gospel. What message are we presenting to the world when we have so much obesity within our church? The next article in that issue...spoke of Ellen White's visions concerning the injurious effects of tobacco, tea, and coffee. It appears that much of our membership has forgotten--or has ignored--her counsel on tea and coffee. A high percentage of our church family regularly uses these beverages. What's even more appalling is the number of our churches, schools, and institutions that serve these items. What is going on? How can we be the "remnant church" when we can't even get our health message straight? Our leaders have to put a stop to this impudent practice in our institutions, and each one of us has to keep these items out of our bodies
It is interesting to note that at the top of the page was a larger-font, excerpt sentence pulled from this letter that I must conclude is something the editors wanted to highlight. It reads: "How can we be the "remnant church" when we can't even get our health message straight?" The irony... It's published in an issue entitled: Finding Them, Keeping Them--Embracing the challenge of discipling new members. |

Simple answer to last question in the letter: You're not. This thinking ("our leaders have to put a stop" ...) highlights being under law rather than under grace & having the guidance of the Holy Spirit. I suggest this writer go picket GAMC re: serving coffee in their cafeteria & see where it gets him/her. Besides, very few SDAs follow EGW (pick & choose) when it inconveniences them to do so. |

"...the health message is the right arm of the gospel." A question: since when was there a "health message" highlighted in the gospels? I never saw one in the gospels like EGW promoted. I mean, by all means, be healthy, but don't put words in the Bible's mouth and don't be all legalistic about it. |

Ahh, heck, i was raised SDA sixty years ago And as long as i can remember each and every SDA person picks And chooses what and what not to follow on EGW 's health message. Even EGW herself didn't abide bye her health message. She continued eating oysters and chicken. What a fraud she was and what a fraud The SDA denomination continues to be. |

I think this writer is right on. Adventists teach that the health message is the right arm of the gospel. If they are going to teach that they had better get church members to live that way. They don't know the gospel - this is the one they're teaching. Coffee, tea, chocolate, sports, reading fiction - all of these things were prohibited by EGW. If she's the end time prophet you better listen to her counsel and live by it in its entirety. By the way, what does he want the SDA church leaders to do - monitor food consumption at potlucks, weigh church members, mandate exercise? If Adventists are going to claim her as a prophet, they better do what she says - all of it. This writer at least has some integrity. |

The hippies And The Hare Krishna's out on my community live closer to EGW 's prescribed health philosophy than most SDA 's i know. I just can't associate the EGW dietary rules with Christianity. However there are religions that The followers of that religion actually live by The food restrictions. Of course it only makes sense that of someone truly believes on reincarnation The person would be vegetarian. |

Great points, Joyfulheart! I think a step in the right direction to keep negligent SDAs on the straight & narrow would be (ala Weight Watchers) to have a scale in the foyer of every church with no admittance if overweight. Plus keep food journals that had to be turned in every Sabbath. Might work! |

And a tape measure, a tread mill, an exercise bike, a few jump ropes, And do SDA 's do Zumba, or is Zumba considered dancing? Maybe they need to add a smoothie bar. Believe me, most SDA 's know very little about health. What they associate with health is not eating pork and going on Saturday nature walks, And that will never include a real hike with a backpack because that would qualify A's working on The Sabbath. |
