Can any of you EGW experts help here? I got a response to an article I wrote on EGW (a long time ago) on my Hungarian blog, asking me about a quotation I used. It is (in English) “Whoever eats the flesh of dead animals, will not be translated.” And the reference I gave is Testimonies 1:187. The enquirer said he could not find this quotation on line anywhere, so I checked and I can't find it either. I have found lots of people alluding to the fact that EGW said things like this, but no specific reference, and I can't now remember where I got that quote from. So, any ideas anyone? Thanks, Adrian |

I have found this thread on this very topic. I wonder if yours is the "anti-adventist" site. http://remnant-online.com/smf/index.php?topic=3550.0 |

Thanks Katarain, I read through the thread, and the main impression I got was "confusion" (I don't read much SDA stuff, is it all like that?) Anyway, what I am also confused about, still, is where did that quote come from if these people are now claiming that there is nothing like it. For instance, Leslie Martin also mentions something similar on the "Spirit behind the church" video, but again, no reference. If it turns out this is wrong, I will delete it from my article, no problem. Adrian |

When I was an SDA, I believed that too, though I don't know where she said that. I believed that Ellen White said that people would be too weak to be able to make it through the time of trouble if they ate meat and that God would "lay them to rest." (I didn't believe that meant they wouldn't be saved - just that they would be "laid to rest" before Jesus' coming.) |

I was taught that meat eaters would not be translated without seeing death. They could be saved but must die first. The problem with sdas is that they define vegetarian as being ok to use milk & eggs (animal products: maybe the fine point is that you can eat eggs & drink milk without killing the animal). Seemingly only VEGANS could be translated . . . .which is the direction sdas are going, along with many in the world at large. |

Many who are now only half converted on the question of meat eating will go from God's people to walk no more with them. Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 382 (1902). What's certain is that she predicted apostasy based on meat eating. In adventist language departing from God's people is the equivalent of losing salvation. Gabriel |

Adrian, Here are some previous posts where I've posted EGW quotes on this subject: http://www.formeradventist.com/discus/messages/11/11109.html#POST146409 http://www.formeradventist.com/discus/messages/5371/3840.html#POST51667 In summary, EGW did not teach the (now popular) SDA belief that you will die (but still be saved) if you eat meat. Rather, she taught that you would be left behind (lost) and not translated if you ate meat, since you would be sinning (eating meat) rather than living a perfect and sinless life. I was raised in a farming/rural community. A sizeable SDA population per captia of community population. All those SDzs's produced & ate alot of meat, eggs and dairy. Never once in the county SDA rchurch did I hear any issue about meat, dairy or eggs but only to avoid the unclean meats, fat and blood. However, in the city churchs I'd hear that the last day messenger said to be Vegetarian. I guess it just depends on what SDA church and person is giving out the rules. |

Jeremy, Thanks too for the quotes. But even so, that still leave us without any specific statement by EGW that meat eaters will not be translated. So I still don't know where I found that quotation from the testimonies. :-( Adrian |

I was looking for a definition of legalism on the net and I came across this, which I thought I would share for general edification: How to become a legalist 1. Make rules outside the Bible. 2. Push yourself to try and keep your rules. 3. Castigate yourself when you don’t keep your rules. 4. Become proud when you do keep your rules. 5. Appoint yourself as judge over other people. 6. Get angry with people who don’t keep your rules, or have different rules. 7. “Beat” the losers. It reminds me of some people I know, who are not even SDA. By the way, one definition I did find is: "Legalism is the idea that human beings can earn or merit right standing with God." - Thomas Schreiner. Short and to the point! |
